i took my daughter, my son, my cousin's daughter and two of their friends on a nature walk yesterday. most city kids are caught up in their daily hustle and bustle and never get the chance to stop and "smell the roses". my own children and i LOVE nature and i wouldn't be a good mother and educator if i didn't share that love with others even when im "off the clock".
as much as i love nature i really didn't have a clue what most of the names of the flowers were. please feel free to identify them for us.
we walked, they pointed and i took pictures of what fascinated them the most.
meet kiana (my daughter), shania (my cousin's daughter), yanae and aliyah (sisters).

they wouldn't let my son, cameron, take photos with them because, you know, he's a boy.

before we even left the block we found some interesting things.

and some not so interesting things.

and so we walked....
these were their favorite flowers:

these were their favorite plants and leaf shapes:

we met a man with 3 dogs and we met this fellow:

some things were edible:

and some were not:

we saw plenty of trees. i didn't concentrate on any particular part of the tree nor did i turn for different angles. i just looked up and took the picture.

we also saw some groovy mixes of colors:

our favorite find of the walk were these gorgeous flowers that i had to almost crawl under to get the shot. does anyone know the name of them?

thanks for walking with us!

But then again I seem to remember boys thinking of girls the same way
I think the last photo is moon flower
You love nature so much that you'll run from an innocent little (ninja?) squirrel. hahaha!!
In case you don't already know about my brown thumb and ignorance of all things live, I saw two plants that I would guess are a sunflower and a rose. Mostly, I just call flowers "pretty" and don't make a fool of myself by trying to name them.
I'll be back with a photo of what I ran across on my nature walk this morning. Maybe you can identify it for me?
heh. sounds like me. since gather is the adjective capital of the online world we'll see if we can find you some others by tonight.
And yes, he loves your peppers!
That's acceptable.
If you release this critter, it will go back to devouring your garden, and everyone elses.
( My spell check really hates that word, "elses"... or else's... so what am I supposed to say instead? )
Debra, I would say else's to reflect possession. The correct way would be something like, "If you release this critter, it will go back to devouring your garden and those of your neighbors." I might go that prissy in an article but seldom in a comment because that isn't how I talk.
I scrolled through a few times, did I miss the doggy photos?
And that yellow flower might be a trumpet.
And pajamas are my clothing of choice these days.
Since no one else has really gotten into identifying the plants, let me take a crack at it, in the order of photos.
bronze Chrysanthemums
Canna ... but I'm not for sure on that one
Impatiens
Butterfly bush
Trumpet flower
lavender Phlox
I really don't know what the bright pink one is
sunflower
rose
coleus
dusty miller
more coleus
caladium
more coleus
nasturtiums
more caladium
and a cat hahaha!
and that dusty miller is weird.
Gracias!

Thanks so much for sharing with my group.
nice photo essay....
thanks........
i do, too.
I used to base my lesson plans on as much outdoor hands on activity as possible when I taught preK and K~ it is a fab perspective on life~ =)
when i dropped my daughter off at school today, my 2nd graders from last year begged me to come back after friday testing because the new teacher doesn't take them on nature walks like i did.
Enjoyed the walk and the photo essay very much.
Thanks for taking us along...will go catch part 2 now.
Couple of things come to mind:
This is something the kids will remember for a long, long time.
There could be an art project in the making here. Contact me off line, if I can help.
You're babes are seriously beautiful...and it is ALWAYS wonderful to be surrounded by kids, their friends, and family.
I love my nieces and nephews as tho they were my own...so I always include them when they're in town.
What a glorious day, and what fine pictures you took. Thanks for sharing your world with us.
Blessed be--I'm off to find installment #2.

What a wonderful thing you're doing. Things have already been identified and when I was younger and able to, I took children on nature walks as well, though I'm not who enjoyed it more, the little ones or me. This, I wish I was still able to do.
One thing I've never seen, is the horse chestnut.
Your children and handsome teen as well as all of them, look so happy and you're not only a good Mom, you're a lucky one as well.
Those homes were incredible.
