Our nation's great history was writ large, boldly, and with eternal words of freedom, carrying a single, simple message, "fear not, foreign aggressors exclusively, fear also, the enemy from within."
Most of the colonists were content to remain loyal British subjects, they had no stake in revolution and felt no obligation to fight for a nation that didn't exist. It was a handful of monied patriots, with strong beliefs and convictions in liberty, that pushed forward their notions of freedom until they could not be ignored.
The masses, are always moved by the minority: this is the essence of change, and change rarely happens by a quorum. Change occurs because one lone voice in the wilderness is disenchanted, discontent with the status quo, and is overwhelmed by the obsession to create the change he perceives as inevitable.
In short, change occurs because of the screaming masses-- the P.C. movement in this country demonstrates this maxim quite nicely. A distinct minority of people were able to achieve, through the P.C. movement, what the masses never would have accepted, were it not for the screaming voices of the minority.
Screaming works, and if you don't believe me-- ask Glenn Beck. No one screams better, or more loudly than Beck, and if one is not amazed by the change in the American electorate that has been wrought by this one man, then you probably aren't amazed by anything.
Here's the plain truth-- unless there is some sort of major, galvanizing event, such as a war, this nation has always existed as a group of people that roughly identify with each other as a nation of like minded people, but also recognizing, we are a group of people with wide ranging views about what should be done with the freedom and liberty we cherish.
The political arena of today, cannot compare to the political arena of the past, as the mudslinging, divisive partisanship, and heated rhetoric of yore is exponentially more virulent than anything we see today. Splintered and seeking divergent, often conflicting goals, the electorate of this nation has always existed as a distinct minority of one, the individual.
Every individual in this nation has their own ideas about freedom, about how freedom should be maintained, and even about the very notions of what freedom itself is--- and the liberty to concoct these ideas, to act upon these ideas, demands the minority of the individual will nearly always be at odds with the majority of other citizens.
Where these ideas meet, becomes the basis for change-- as like minded, minority individuals seek power in numbers to force their beliefs upon the rest of the nation, legally, through the legislative process.
M.A.D.D--- changed the nation and drunk driving laws.
John Hinkley attempting to shoot Ronald Reagan, and instead hitting James Brady, changed the nation with the Brady Bill.
Glenn Beck, one man with a microphone, is changing the nation with his message.
The examples are endless, and the "screaming voices" of the electorate are the vital lifeblood of this nation.
