Yelling pointlessly at my radio

Here I am, minding my own business, listening to MPR, and on comes an "expert" on getting a job. A caller had been out since November, just like me, so my ears perked up a bit.

This expert started out well, by saying that many employers are seeing this kind of long unemployment gaps, but then she went on to say that the caller hadn't been doing nothing, that obviously a person unemployed for that long had taken classes, volunteered for things, found ways to stay current, or got a part-time job.

Well, lady, do I have news for you.

Not much to tell. I covered every business in any way related to graphic arts production floor work. By March, I had applied at Sexworld. Kinda went downhill from there.

I had a long stretch of unemployment. All my time was taken up by submitting resumes at all hours of the day and night. Classes? With what, the unemployment that doesn't even cover the rent?

I haven't lived this far below the poverty line since I was a kid. Back then, some suburban housewife made my mom cry, because my mom was taking up her valuable time in line, with our food stamps.

I saw a situation like that only recently in the grocery store. I was behind the lady complaining. She didn't say anything to the person who "wasted her time" (of little credit to her), but when she made a remark to the cashier I couldn't keep my mouth shut. She paid and left, the cashier just looked at me a smiled. No more need be said.
