The Climbing Wall in Pittsburgh is one of my favorite places in the Burgh. It's an indoor climbing gym located on Penn Avenue. The Climbing Wall has a large bouldering area with a wide variety of climbing routes for beginners all the way up to experts. It's a great workout and a lot of fun at the same time.
My kids love it too. We started climbing regularly last year and have a blast every time. The Climbing Wall is great place to start learning if you are new and want to give climbing a try in a safe manner. They offer a beginner belaying class also.
Check out the Climbing Wall web site for more information.

There are two main areas in the gym. One is what's known as the "bouldering" area. Bouldering is relatively low height climbing that doesn't require ropes or protective gear (though you have to sign a helmet waiver). That's were these pictures were taken. That doesn't mean you can't get hurt, but typically you partner with a spotter too who can assist if you feel a fall coming on. Just yell "Falling"!
The other area is known as the "top roping" section. That's much higher and gear is definitely needed there. You'll need a harness and will be tied in to a rope with a partner who can belay you. The belayer is responsible for your safety and has the rope secured. This requires training and some experience.
The best thing is to start off low height bouldering and go from there. It get's you used to the climbing experience with small risks. They do offer classes which is the best way to start off if you are new and don't have an experienced buddy.
