A mother bird will take care of its baby as long as she can find it, even if it is on the ground. If you know where the nest is the best thing to do is move it close to the nest, and just hope some mean kitty or hungry ants don't get to it.

normally if the mother bird smells human scent on the bird she wont bother with it. I don't know if someone else tried to hold the bird or it fell out of the nest.

I think that's true, my mother used to say that and told me not to touch the robbins eggs, when I was young-they were so pretty and blue and tempting to touch.

I think your little bird will die, we kept one alive once by putting it in a nest we made in a tree nearby and feeding it bread and worms, but it died.

Actually, a bird's sense of smell is pretty poor. But, if she thinks that humans have messed with a nesting area, they may abandon it.

I know you shouldnt touch it but if your worried that an animal might get it you should do what Winona said. My mother took in all kinds of animals like this growing up and with the baby bird she would feed it with a dropper till it was better and let it go, or call the wildlife people and they would take it

I Agree with dreama, my grandfather would feed abandoned baby birds with a clean eye dropper w/lukewarm milk & bread, several times a day,until the little bird was well & strong. then let them go....... Hope this Helps.

First, you need to know that most of the "conventional wisdom" is wrong, and there are a lot of myths about baby birds.

Birds can't smell your scent and will not abandon a baby just because you picked it up. If it fell out of a nest and you can put it back, do so. If it has flight feathers, it may have left the nest on its first flight, and the mother is watching over it until it can fly well. In that case, leave it alone, because the mother will not come in to feed and care for it if you are nearby.

I agree with Ada, if the bird is a fledgling, it's probably best to leave it alone as long as the mother is still caring for it. Young birds tire out easily when they first learn how to fly, so they might stay on the ground for a while before trying again. You can pick it up and put it back in the nest, but it may fall/fly out of it again.

This is basically nature taking its course.

I have always heard if a human messes with a birdie, the mother will not want to take care of it, sort of like kittens, when you touch newborns sometimes the mother will eat the kittens.
