( he,he,he,he) WIPE OUT !!!!!
You remember it , right ? Great Drum Solo Song , right ? If you're a former teen-age drummer like me , one of your proudest moments in life was learning to beat out the rhythm of WIPE OUT --- whether on the kitchen table , or actually on the drums .
Well, the song is back in the spotlight again. So much so that The Associated Press released a correction on Tuesday Sept. 15, to a story it printed on Sept 14 . Here is the actual correction .
( If you watched the final performance by AMERICA'S GOT TALENT finalists RECYCLED PERCUSSION Monday Night-- you're a step ahead of the rest .) :
" In a Sept. 14th story about AMERICA'S GOT TALENT , the Associated Press erroneously reported the title and artists of a song performed by RECYCLED PERCUSSION . The contestant group covered WIPE OUT, not "Wipeout", which was originally performed by The Surfari's, not The Beach Boys. "
Meanwhile YOUTUBE has a listing for a performance of WIPEOUT by The Safaris. ( Not The Surfaris . )
And of course , we aren't speaking here of WipEout , a new game . Nor or we talking about WIPEOUT, the current ABC obstacle course gameshow ---WHICH SHOULD definitely not be confused with the syndicated studio game show from 1988-1989 called: yeah, you guessed it ; WIPEOUT.
What we are definitely talking about is the drum beat driven song 'WIPE OUT' by the SURFARIS of Glendora California ( not the american pop group THE SAFARI'S from L.A, who in 1959 had a little song called IMAGE OF A GIRL . And of course, we shouldn't confuse either of those groups with THE ORIGINAL SURFARI'S , who had to rename their group that; after the other SURFARIS who recorded WIPEOUT , recorded .... WIPE OUT .)
But how did The Associated Press get The Surfari's hit WIPEOUT ( featured in the movie DIRTY DANCING with the late great PATRICK SWAYZE, who died, tragically and ironically on Monday ---the same night RECYCLED PERCUSSION performed WIPEOUT on America's Got Talent ) --- how did The Assoc. Press get that song confused with The Beach Boys in the first place ?
Well, that's where the 1980's rap group THE FAT BOYS comes in . On their 1987 album 'CRUSHIN', The Fat Boys wrote a rap with lyrics , apparently done to the drum driven beat of The Surfari's original Wipe Out . On that rap song version, The Beach Boys sang back up to The Fat Boys. ( Hey, the AP could've made worse mistakes in reporting.)
But where did that massively popular drumbeat come from. It was, I have learned, a sped-up version of The Charter Oak Marching Band's drum corp drum cadence . A young 17 yr old High School boy named Ron Wilson was head drummer . ( He who played the drum solo on this great instrumental hit )
But--oh, did I mention that this famous drum driven hit was created and recorded at the last minute when The Surfari's learned they needed a B-side for their 'intended hit ' SURFER JOE. Ever heard of that song ? Not as much as you've heard of its last minute B-side.
And to clear up any false claims and 'erroneous' assumptions that have appeared over the years :
'WIPE OUT' was written (so to speak ; abruptly created would be a better term ) by The Surfaris themselves: Bob Berryhill , Pat Connolly , Jim Fuller, and Ron Wilson --- with that signature high-pitched ' witch laugh' vocal intro supplied by Dale Smallin, the owner of the studio where these 'high school kids' were recording their song -- financed the mother of one of the boys. ( A lot of other claims have been made about authorship and creation, but since the above mentioned Berryhill got the royalty checks, I'd defer to him. )
Interestingly, Ron Wilson, who died of a brain aneurysm in 1989 ( again, he was the drummer of record here) --- later set the world record for continuous drum solo at 104 and a half hours . I don't know if he was playing WIPEOUT at the time.
(p.s.--- I forgot to add that WIPE OUT was originally to have been named either "STILLETO'', or 'SWITCHBLADE' ( depending on report ) --and , in either case, the original planned opening, instead of the 'witch-laugh', was to have been the sound of the opening of a switchblade knife which one of the band members had on him in the studio. )
