For those who thought having a forty million dollar rookie quarterbacking an 0-16 train wreck would bring instant success I can only hope your money spend on lottery tickets go further. The problems existing within the Detroit Lions’ organization are legion, and they manifest themselves from top to bottom. Not one man, not one season, and not this Sunday, no, you will not see instant improvement.
They told Mike Singletary he couldn’t coach a team in the NFL the way he was coaching them during training camp. Too harsh! Too physical! Too much 1985 Bears! Mike’s Niners waxed the defending NFC Champs, the Cardinals, and they did it the old fashioned way, by kicking their ass. I’m not saying Superbowl but I am saying to put yourself on the field of play with this team is to do so at your own peril.
Norv Tuner must go.
The Wildcat Offence isn’t far behind Turner in Things That Have Had Their 15 Minutes. Miami ran it last year as well as anyone alive, and they did very well with it too. The Falcons’ defense went after them with an axe Sunday afternoon and kept them pinned down and hogtied for fifty minutes. Either the Dolphins are not as good this year as they were last year or the Falcons are better than we thought.
Brady at any level is better than most other quarterbacks at 100%. The Bills are a better team than most think, but TO isn’t why. TO will be, eventually, why they aren’t any better than they are, but Monday night showed the Pats are back, and the Bills are, well, the Bills.
The “Worst Game in NFL History” was played Sunday, between the Broncos and the Bengals. Forever, both teams will be cursed. Both teams should be blacked out of playing in front of a camera or live audiences. It was the saddest sixty minutes I’ve seen since the Falcons were in the Superbowl.
The most interesting thing in NFL football occurred when the Eagles signed Jeff Garcia this week. They either (a) Do not trust Michael Vick, or (b) Do not believe he can win, or (c) some combination of the first two options. You have a man who is supposed to be able to start being a high quality QB yet as soon as your starter takes a hit you hire a man who is just slightly younger than Farve to do what exactly? Garcia is a known winner. He’s well liked in Philly. He’s also a tough son of a bitch who can handle a lot of pressure. He will start before Vick will.
Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Jake Dehomme, Kurt Warner, Brett Farve, and more than a few other alleged great quarterbacks had less than stellar days Sunday with Dehomme getting benched. Did I miss the part where these guys were getting paid to play on the first day of the season? Some of the guys who are mere millionaires rather than multimillionaires played just slightly worse.
Very little if nothing can truly be told about the state of play after one week. But this was a very weak week one, and no one team stood out as having spent the offseason or the preseason well. The Niners did look very sharp, and looked that way against an alleged first tier team, but who can say? I will say if Singletary can inject his intensity into this team they will surprise a lot of people and hurt a lot of feelings.
Take Care,
Mike

That is a pretty good assessment of the situation.
I could QB a team with Peterson in the backfield!
Still, Brees did look very crisp on a lot of passes.
I enjoyed the Raiders game, though--and I never thought I'd say those words. It was like watching roller derby! How many injuries were there?
