Ancient Burying Ground - Hartford CT

After lunch in Hartford this afternoon, my brother and I walked to the Ancient Burying Ground.    A cemetary dating back to the 1600's.

 This headstone was for William Leete, Governor of New Haven Colony.  He died at age 72 in 1683.   A good long life for that time.

These were amazing. They look similiar in style to the tombstones at Trinity Church in NYC.

I'm surprised it all held up this well. Great essay, JoAnn.
They are so old, I remember that about being in Mass. compared to Minnesota. The cemeteries look so different.

You find the coolest places. Around here, an 1800s grave is pretty old.

Mr. Leete did live a long time for his era. Wow...he probably outlived six or seven wives.
Hartford? I didn't know there was one there! We have one in East Windsor, CT, about 20 minutes north of Hartford and the table grave stone that you photographed? There's one very much like it at the one near us. Well, Hartford's near us too, but I didn't know that this was there.
Hartford's is better kept up than ours is, some of the smaller graves have the Angels Of Death carved in them. Interesting and guess what road it's on? Cemetery Road - not kidding.

wow, that is old! Nothing around here dating before the mid 1800's. Some craftsman put a lot of work into those headstones. Interesting photo essay!

Wow, the Governor did live a long life. Very unusual for that time. An interesting cemetery, one that I would love to visit myself.
