My husband bikes the Little One to school. He stays around longer, trying to educate people about school zone traffic violations. There are a few parents who pull into the bike lane to drop off their children instead of taking the time to drive into the parking lot. A person cannot park, sit, or stand in the bike lane of a school zone. It causes many kids to veer out into the street to bike around the vehicle.
Yesterday one mom had enough and as she pulled out of the bike lane after dropping her kids off, she hit my hubby. He called the police and they had to wait and wait to fill out a report. According to my hubby, the excuse she gave the police, I'm in such a rush in the mornings, I don't have time to take them to the parking lot. Meanwhile she cut out an hour of her morning yesterday to fill out a police report. No officer, I can't take five more minutes in the morning to follow the rules but I don't mind sitting here for an hour so you can charge me with felony aggravated assault. Does this make sense?
My husband was cited for going the wrong way. He wasn't actually riding the bike but he did have it in the bike lane going against the flow of traffic. Still I was more aghast at the woman's thinking. She hit my husband and willing sat there for an hour to get charged with aggravated assault, thinking the police were going to tell the biker he was in the wrong and deserved to get hit?! Five extra minutes, lady, that's all it takes to make sure your children and other people's children stay safe.
