I just finished reading the speech, President Obama is to give tomorrow. The text of which can be found at Examiner.com.
I found nothing in it that anyone should find objectionable. Then again, if you think studying hard and getting an education to fulfill ones dreams are liberal and leftist ideas, then yes you are going to find objections.
"And no matter what you want to do with your life – I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it." (excerpt of speech)
So what is wrong with the President of the United States telling children this? I know some will say it's liberal brainwashing.Â
I have a sister and brother... neither of them finished high school. My sister is on welfare. My brother, though he supports himself, does so and just barely; he has no dreams or visions of a better future and acknowledges that he failed himself by dropping out of school. I have three children, who followed in the footsteps of their father and dropped out of school. They find it difficult to hold down a job in a small town where jobs are scarce. Had they finished school and perhaps even furthered their education by either college or vo-tech, perhaps their situations would be better then they are now.
I think the president taking the time to address the kids and encouraging them to stay in school is a great thing.  He should be commended not condemned.

My mom is one of the ones still upset because Hillary isn't president. : )
That being said, I am slightly disappointed that the only blue collar job he mentioned was a policeman. I don't usually like to put links in comments, but if you'll allow me this one time, I'd appreciate it.
Mike Rowe Celebrates Dirty Jobs - For Your Labor Day Viewing Pleasure
Mike Rowe makes a lot of sense when discussing the down and dirty jobs that are needed in order to get this country moving again. They are just as important as the nurses, doctors, researchers and engineers. I don't think this should be forgotten.
Thank you, Nancy, for posting the link to his speech.
I've know people who were dependent on others just to fill out the application. Why? Because they didn't bother to finish school and couldn't figure it out.
I think it's a valuable speech. Now, maybe the fear will settle down and we can get back to fussing over other fringe issues. :)
I wouldn't let Bush read to children from an upside down fairy tale while the planes hit the Twin Towers, that was a bad message to send... (sharp intake of breath from the Right here)
JFK said pretty much the same thing when he made his speech to us kids back in the early Sixties, he said something about having a man on the moon by the end of the century, how many of the kids listening to that probably went on to become pioneers in the space programme? The Repubs have turned into this fear faction where anything that threatens their sanctity of back woods ideals is the anti Christ and they are going to make sure another generation of sub-standard human beings is propulgated, shameful!
Lots of children who could never really relate to a President before can relate to this one. I can imagine what they'll d do to the first lady President. When many more children could relate to her.
And again the anti- Christ is not a person
they will pick apart every sentence & turn it upside down, then spew it from their own mouths with hate & ugliness. it's very sad that there is so much hate in this country.
Although, deep down inside, I do wish they would start thinking and looking at reality for a while.
I watched the reaction from students here in the Philadelphia area and they were most grateful for the 20 minute pep talk by President Obama. He didn't speak above their heads. He spoke in plain terms that they could all understand. In other words, the children were able to relate to what the President was talking about.
If there was one positive effect of the week of lunacy and hysterical behavior we witnessed, it is that millions more children and adults paid close attention to what the President said. And we can only be better off for that.
