But I think it's cute.  It's interesting, or perhaps synchronicity that when I was trying to fall asleep last night I was thinking about this, that and the other thing and I got to thinking about where our country is heading if things continue.

I suddenly thought about how great it will actually be for my grandkids and their kids.  Just think, they won't have to work hard to get a nice house, or a good car, if it goes as it's going now, everyone will have the same.

That means, and this really did make me think differently about my conservative, capitalistic views--my kids won't have to work hard to put their kids in good colleges because as we move along, every college will be the same.  No more high charging Harvard or Yale, it will be the same education for all as it will be the same wages for all, the same health care for all.

Those thoughts really did go through my mind last night and then today I was this video

Kurt Vonnegut wrote a short story on this very subject (about mediocrity being the only standard allowed) but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. Help me out. It was a man's name.

Harrison Bergeron" is a short story set in the year 2081. It takes place in the United States of America, in the living room of George and Hazel Bergeron. This is a time when the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments to the Constitution have made equality the law. This means that all people are seen as equal in every way, in intelligence, in beauty, in athleticism, and in talent.
That story by Kurt scared the cr** out of me~

=( I dounno~Mary~ I understand the sarcasm in the piece~ the video would also be funny if it didn't actually make sense~ though I do believe in a fair chance for all~ I'd rather go off and live with tree frogs and sloths than have a society of automatons~there are so many sociopolitical layers~it isn't as simple or clear cut as he makes it seem~ sigh
I think we're all f***ed to a point either way~
And though I honestly resent the fact that I have to dish out almost a grand monthly for full family health coverage and bust my a** working to be able to do that while others get a free ride~I do in a perverse way feel lucky that I can still afford to do that~

Ah, the ultimate liberal conundrum- People should be equal but...They just aren't. Period, Paragraph, End of Memo. Point to JR. In your face.....(well, in the nicest possible way, if you get my drift.)

Luck has nothin' to do with it, darlin'. You are smarter and work harder than the average kittie-kat. Me too (Well, I used to work harder before I found out that there isn't much percentage in it.) You need to go back and read "Atlas Shrugged" and then write John Galt's speech on the blackboard 5 times--in your catholic school girl with dog collar and Doc Marten's outfit. I'll be there with the ruler just in case you are naughty... Don't make me come over there...Don't forget the white knee soxs...

Seriously, I feel sorry for those that are just rat-f**ked at birth but I am tired of the (is this politically correct?) under-class whining about their problems instead of getting off their collective asses and gittin' 'er done.

I was picking strawberries with itinerant Mexicans when I was eight. They had the whole family out there and lived in hovels that looked like chicken coops. Without them, the strawberries would have rotted in the fields. Anybody that bitches about illegal workers needs to go see "A Day without A Mexican". No Americans will do what they do for the money they get paid... Wait, this is starting to be a rant and everytime I do that, some old lady trolls me. JR OUT!!

everyone should have EQUAL OPPORTUNITY to ACHIEVE whatever they are driven to ACHIEVE and should then be thusly commended and rewarded for their efforts with solid employment and possibility for advancement~
In other words it should be a practiced philosophy of you GET OUT OF IT WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT~
and it is our responsibility as a humane society to care for those who are disabled and provide every possible opportunity for a quality of life for those who were not born with a silver spoon in their mouth~which is most of us~

Atlas Shrugged is one of the worst written, most stilted, unappetizing pieces of literature it has ever been my misfortune to read. If you want to get excited about the entrepreneurial spirit, I would recommend most of Robert Heinlein's excellent speculative fiction.

...Of the People, By the People, and For the People? If there's any separation of People and State it's as a result of a complacent citizenry. The government is US and NOT some separate entity - unless we as a free people choose to make it so.

Instead of complaining - organize and use the people's internet to do something about it. Useless gibitee-jabber only ends up in a wasted gaseous state of nothingness, lost forever in cyberspace. Organize and make a difference. There's power in numbers and a united people can use the Internet to demand the will of the people. The alternative is more socialism in the guise of democracy.

Jericho, no one is talking about revolution. All I said was that we should get involved instead of useless commentary that falls on deaf ears and goes nowhere. If a free people don't like what their government is doing - stand up and be counted instead of just complaining about it.

No Jericho, the government is us and what we want it to become. It only becomes a separate entity when a free people do nothing and become slaves to it.

Apparently you have no faith in your country. You seem to believe that our government is only some monolithic leveler of talent. If that is the case, it is because American people have become too complacent and hidebound to make the difference we have always been meant to and honored. That hidebound mentality is more "conservative" than "liberal."

Libra- I wish everyone would stop using the terms "liberal" and "conservative". They have lost all meaning. How can you call someone who believes in Big Government over individual rights a "liberal". How can someone who spent more taxpayer money than any other president be called a "conservative"?

Good video with a frightening message. Whenever I see praise or criticism of "the government", I remember that WE THE PEOPLE are the government. We direct our legislators how to vote. We vote them out or retain them, depending on performance.
Taking away the incentive to strive for more, improve circumstances and observe a strict work ethic sounds like the way to mediocrity, a stop on the road to obliteration.
