Origin of the Gods
Chapter #1
Othala
Was she not always mother and did she not always love, fear, despise and desire him; this brute, this monster, this Ape? There they are in the marsh bog, that same bog where the old ones are wrapped and sunk. The shallow brackish water is cool, and the heat of the Creator/Sun bakes his flesh as he stalks them through the reeds. His tongue licks his upper lip tasting salt as his nose takes in the rot of the bog and his own sweaty scent. Angrily he watches them as they forage for roots by the graves of the old ones, their feet making that swishing sucking sound in the shallows he was so familiar with. Their happy clattering only serves to intensify his confusion and anger. Why is he being cast out now? All the females he grew up with suddenly are pulling away from him. He feels different in his body when he looks at them, like an ache deep in his belly. He'd mounted the mother before as she taught him the way, and when he tries to do the same with a female his own age, she screams and runs away. And now when he approaches, the mother shuns him, and not just her, all the mothers are against him. He could take what he wants and what he needs. His anger mixes freely with his lust as he rushes out of hiding and takes up the chase.
All the females flee accept one. From the corner of her eye she watches as he bears down on her. Her heart sinks in despair, as a tear forms in the corner of her eye. This is her son, her baby, yet he has come to the end of his boyhood cycle. She steadies herself, her hands still foraging in the shallow dank water as he nears. Swiftly she draws an old femur from the depths of the ancient grave and violently strikes him repeatedly. Falling back in shock, he cries out, "Mamha, mamha!" Tearing and shaking, she gestures to her mouth the sign for food and begins a mock hunt in the form of a feast dance. Wildly she gestures the stabbing motions of the lance, then seeing his confusion she throws the dead man's femur at his feet. Staring down at this ancient bone, he realizes what the mother had been trying to teach him and he sees his mistake. He is not shunned, but instead has become a man and now must prove himself in the hunt.

origin of love
Excellent article, Mr. Lynn. I can actually visualize the figures in the story. Very primitive and savage the life must have been.
Really who is that in the picture???
Super enjoyable article on a myth.

Curious about who first wrote down these 'stories', way way back in the day...
