As I do most nights, I surfed channels tonight in search of my favorite commercials. I have a huge crush on Ajay Bhatt, the Intel superstar, and I enjoy the Progressive Insurance girl and Creditreport.com guys. I caught each of my favorites a couple of times but also found a new ad that made me stop and think instead of laughing.
Some fairly-sane and mostly-healthy-looking people smiled their ways across the screen while a guy with a pharmaceutical-doctory-voice said the following: “Illness doesn’t care where you live, or if you’re already sick, or if you lose your job and your health insurance shouldn’t either. If everyone is covered, we can make healthcare affordable for everyone and the words “pre-existing condition” will become a thing of the past. We’re America’s Health Insurance Companies, supporting bipartisan reforms that Congress can build on.”
My mind went into a tailspin and I wondered why it had taken me so long to understand. All these years, I didn’t know I had to have bipartisan support in Congress in order to do the things I am supposed to do. So, I ask each of you to please contact your representatives and ask for bipartisan support of the following:
- I would like to shower when I’m dirty.
- I want to post on Gather when I have something to say.
- I would like to purchase popcorn without showing my I.D.
- I want to pay my bills early.
- I am campaigning for the ability to clean my ears with something smaller than my elbow.
- I demand the right to tell the truth without being waterboarded.
- I want to set my thermostat on 70.
- I would like to buy Aleve without a prescription.
- I want spearmint instead of peppermint.
- I would like to sleep without a pillow on the third Tuesday of each week.
- I want to change channels mid-show.
- It would be nice if I could blink when my eyes are dry and pee when my bladder is full.
Thank you for your support.
Just for fun:

I want to save you some time, Sandy... here's a YouTube link where you can listen to all 4 FreeCredit Report commercials at one go.
I just found out about Ajay Bhatt last week! I'm a slow learner... gimme some time, ok!
Ajay Bhatt is the new Rock Star, doncha know?
He's the co-inventor of the USB :-)
Your Ajay Bhatt is different from mine... so, which one is the real Ajay?
If you click on MY co-inventor of the USB link, you get a full page commercial... a BIGGER more gorgeous Ajay Bhatt to drool over.
:-)
(He reminds me of my first husband.)
My point? Maybe just using pups and babies to impress folks about the importance of tolerance and having someone to care enough to work towards assuring decent medical care is THE answer! It is pretty obvious by now that all the talking heads in the world have not managed to get thru to half the people that should be marching with torches!
I'm seldom able to put the brand and the ad together so I was proud when I got three right for this article. The ads are entertainment (or not) to me and I am not likely to buy something because I like the ad. Really, I'm more likely to not buy something because I hate the ad than I am to buy because I like it.
I hate ads on TV. I make a point of watching shows I've Tivo'd first so I can fast forward thru the commercials.
Hmmm..... Heartstrings? Not hardly but a few well placed raps on their horned noggins might get their attention!
Just came back to drop a few 'needles' in your 'thread'!
Don't know why using the bold option riles up certain people but since they told me it does...........I will ablige there too! LOL
Sooo... I have to confess, I was not familiar with the names you mentioned as your favorite commercials and had to Google them before I could find anything about them, Sandy!
I had a very nice chat with my doctor yesterday, since I was her last patient of the day. She is a young 32 year old Endocrinologist who has had her private practice for a year and a half now. We actually talked about Obama's health care reform. I mentioned that I have a young doctor in my family (an Oncologist, her age). When asking either of these young people what they thought of Obama's public health care plan, both expressed their concern that it will lower their income in such a way that it will make it very difficult to pay off their loans for the years they've committed to college degrees.
Neither were against regulating the insurance companies... since they cause a problem also... which often interferes with the care they can or cannot give to their patients.
To be fair, though... I didn't have much time to discuss this in detail with either doctors, although I'd love to be able to have an in depth conversation with them. I like to learn from different perspectives, and "feel" what they're "feeling" and why.
I do like the Intel commercials though.
I'm not much of a commercial watcher. I use my right (as granted in the Constitution) to go to the bathroom or wash up some dishes at that time.
The constitution also grants you the right to use the bathroom or wash up dishes during regular programming so you don't have to miss commercials. Isn't it amazing how flexible our constitution is? My favorite part is where it says we can lie like snakes if it serves greed.
(Yeah, my opinion of bipartisanship has not changed in all these weeks.)
And that's all good citizens should carry guns and hate people who aren't rich and don't use their bootstraps.
I've written him. How about joining in?
I like the Progressive woman. I think the Free Credit Report guys look and act like the demographic the ads are aimed at. I'm really tired of prescription drug ads. Our 12 year old niece was convinced she had restless leg syndrome for a while last year.
I dated a Republican once also. .
No itching, uh, well never mind even I am not that mean.
I think maybe we have been hoodwinked again not as bad as bush but hoodwinked just the same.
It does show up on my friends post list.
True, I don't like to use gather email, it is to slow for me to wait for each page to load and all that. I read as many posts as I can stand to wait to load.
Comment, then give up for a while.
And I agree with you about Gather mail. I hate it and would much rather respond to a comment. So, thank you!
Gotta go - some bridge property just came on the market in Brooklyn and I need to put in a bid....
Next the government could start and program and then turn it over to a private company for good. .. non profit.
Medicorp in town is non profit, they still pay huge salary, in fact they had good returns last year and all the big shots got extra bonuses.
The mentality has to change from for profit to a good salary.
