Free Write For 9/2/09 - star shine
“He whose face gives no light, shall never become a star.”
William Blake
Welcome all DailyFreewrite members, Friday Free Writes Featured members, and anyone who should find this splendid example of brain dumping.
Thirty four years ago we drove in his little yellow (lemon?) Toyota Corona to a place out east of Bend, Oregon; toward the tiny town of Brothers. We pulled off to the side of the road and sat there without any man made lighting, looked at the planets, the constellations, the blanket of stars like diamonds sparkling on a length of black velvet. We listened to the coyotes calling to each other. We sat there listening, watching, saying nothing, not even touching. It was enough that we were in the same place in that one moment. It was a warm summer night and we rolled down the windows and we each stuck our head out to hear the desert sounds, to watch the moon transit, to feel our hearts begin to beat as one. He trusted me enough to take part in one of his solitary sojourns. He invited me into his world. It is good to be able to be with a person without having to fill the perceived silence with chatter. I felt so connected to him, to the world, to the universe, to God. We drove back in silence; not wanting to spoil our perfect peace. I still treasure his ability to just sit and be still.
