In a recent article, I noted that images of summer boating and canoeing have power to evoke nostalgic feelings.
Rowing Through Summer: My Own Private Summerpics Festival
"In my youth, a goodly portion of every summer was spent on the water, and I am drawn even now to the prospect of a leisurely paddle up a quiet stream or creek.
There is something about late summer sun, lazy afternoons, and a boathouse or a lake that elicits strong emotions.
Thus, as our summer ends, I am initiating My Own Private Summerpics Festival TM in celebration of lakes and rowboats, running streams and canoes."

Although the feeling and the experience of summer changes at Labor Day, the season continues until the Autumnal Equinox on September 22.
The last picture reminds me very strongly of late summer and early Fall canoe trips, even after school and University had started up once more.

It's interesting how Labor Day is regarded as signaling the end of summer, though there's at least half a month to go. Similarly Memorial Day is often thought of as the beginning, though it's still in spring. Perhaps it has to do with our school year, but I feel the same way still, though I'm well out of touch with school these days.
But it is the canoe and the boats that I miss the most.
It stays with us.
