It's from mon cheri which translates from french to my love.

My love or my dear. Usually for men it's mon cher and when you're saying it to a woman it's ma cherie. I'm French on my mom's side and have Cajun cousins on my dad's side so I've heard relatives use this term all my life.

I always thought my love when someone said this to me. There were many wonderful aspects to living in New Orleans when we did. I enjoyed it a lot. And being referred to kindly was one of those nice parts.

I've heard it as mon cher, I assume is a shortening of "mon cheri"
