White wisps of cloud soften the pale blue sky.
Hollyhocks shiver and tremble in the breeze
Rows upon rows of sunflowers march backwards
Up the hill--pretty ladies in matching bonnets
Warm their faces in summer light
Before the coming frost.

I'm ready for some cooler temps but NOT for winter.
Delightful words.
September comes too soon, it seems. Sigh. But your words warm my heart, Wil.
Thanks for bringing back memories of the first time my family and I saw a commercial field of dwarf sunflowers... We were all tired, driving sleepy and bored on a vacation trip to Missouri... and suddenly coming around a sharp bend we saw a whole field that stretched as far away as the horizon, yellow sunflowers so perfect and beautiful we all sat and gasped in wonder. We stopped the car and just sat there for a few minutes to soak it all in. I doubt any of us will ever forget that picture. My kids still love to plant sunflowers.
Wow, Wilhelmine - such beautiful poetry. And the photos, too.
Happens I was up in my son's garden taking pics of sunflowers today.
I'm back to read it again.
This is so wonderfully descriptive! I love the image of the sunflowers marching backwards--their heads are hanging, ruing the end of summer.
I love it!
