Would you let your 13 year old do this?

At this point, I don't  not have a 13 year old, but if my kids were I would say no way.

Dutch authorities are trying to stop this 13 year old girl from sailing around the world solo.  They are trying to take custody of the child.  They are concered about a bunch of different things.. I will post the link in a moment.

From what I read in the article they are worried about priates and other things.

 

Now ask you gatherland would you let your 13 year old daughter do this or do you think the goverment is over stepping??

Nope I don't think anyone should sail alone. There are too many variables in the ocean.

I think the Dutch government is 100% correct on this one. They should absolute take her from her stupid parents. There are TONS of pirates out there!! I have just recently seen 3 or 4 shows on Discovery and TLC about pirates. A 13 year old girl is nothing but bait for these dirty men.
My child will be lucky to walk to the bus by himself at 13 much less!! (My son is 11)

I have a 13-year-old daughter who has a sailing certificate through the Girl Scouts and there is no way I would let her sail solo. There are too many things that could go wrong. My daughter is smart and well mannered and independent - BUT - she cannot cook without burning something and can barely walk up the stairs without falling. At this age they still need lots of guidance and supervision.

NO NO NO NO NO Way!!!!!! I have a 13 year old daughter who is a pretty good inteligent and responsible child but even so she still has a lot to learn about life and the world. There is no way I would let her do something like that. I would be weary of letting her do that 18 although I would not have a choice, I would bug her un-relentingly until she changed her mind.

Seeing as I just vetoed the idea of Raegan going to a concert solo at 13, uh... NO. I won't even let her tube down the river solo yet, and she's been tubing that river for 4 years now.

I dont think so! I wouldnt mind if there were otthers going with but to sail by herself no way in hell would I allow that.

No way would I allow my child to go solo. To many things could go wrong. I don't think a 13 yr old has the capibilty or maturity to think things through in case of disaster happens. I mean come on look at all those nasty storms and such out in the oceans right now...can you imagine a 13 yr old girl getting caught in the middle of one of those?

Certainly not! I mean, if they can be close by (like on another boat or something), that would be one thing, but not totally by herself.

I've heard of 40 year old men getting killed while sailing around the world.

No I would not allow this! With all that is going on in the world, kids being stole, hurt, murdered, I don't even think I'd let my 13 year old walk home from school, let alone go on a trip like THAT alone!?!?

Absolutely not. I would have thought though that a second boat accompanying the girl would have just naturally been part of this. If there's no second boat, no way.

no, with every age comes maturity..she may know how to sail, but can she flip a boat over if it capsizes, or it there is a tidal wave, can she sail through that?? or while in port, if a man grabs her, can she fight him off? Honestly, the government should have the parents head examined...

I think it is admirable that this girl has confidence in herself to accomplish this but self confidence does not take precedence over common sense and safety. I believe in parents supporting their children but not when it endangers them.

It's dangerous for an adult to to do. No way would I let a child attempt it.
