Renaissance Fairs & Turds

Thought a Renaissance Fair would be fun,

Dressed up and dragged yeti,

Everything was fake; including the gun.

The Ho-ho inhalers were petty,

Sorry if I don't fit in,

Sorry if I'm not one of your herd,

sorry if yellow is my skin,

sorry if you're just a turd.

Have you ever gone to a Renaissance Fair? were you treated the way I was? In my experience they are super lame and filled with jealous women who were not nice at all to me.

I'm sure this isn't the case with every Renaissance Fair, but it was the case in the one I attended.

I cannot imagine anyone treating you badly, especially at a Renaissance Fair. I love Renaissance Fairs. One of my sons competes in their Highland game events. He does something called a Caber Throw, where they toss a telephone pole into the air and it has to flip over before it hits the ground. LOL He's good at it and usually wins either first or second place in his division. He also does some kind of boulder throwing contest where they twirl around and then throw this hugh rock as far as they can .... I know it sounds dumb, but it's fun to watch. I'm sorry if someone was rude to you because most of them are out there to make fun of themselves. I always think they are fun.

oh lee, thanks, i figured it was just the one i went to. even with my white hubby at my side (which could've worked for or against me) the majority of ppl were very rude and i even heard some in the corners making comments about me being asian

yeah, i don't think ALL of them are this way at all, just the one i went to

They are not a big thing here in the UK. In Scotland we tend to have Highland Games in the summer, but the emphasis is decidedly different to the same thing in the USA where it seems to be lots of stalls to take money out of the attendees! I attended two Games whilst on holiday in the USA... they were a real shock!

I'm sorry you were treated shabbily. I never cease to be amazed that people can be nasty to one's face without feeling shame!
I go every year -- but only for Ye Olde Jalapeno Poppers... ;^)

There is a month long one in a town near us but I have never attended it. I have wanted to but the rest of the family is not interested.

We've been to one a couple times, including this past summer. We were treated well and there was a spirit of comradery. Some people spend hours making their costumes and are gracious about discussing them. The vendors generally were friendly and not pushy. I'm sorry you had an unfavorable experience.

That is so wrong! I live in Hickville and my Chinese wife is treated well. There has been only one instance where something may have happened, but I did not catch it, only suspect. It was some white kids, the oldest thinks he is black, the hat off to the side, the gangbanger strut, cheap rhinestones in the shape of the dollar sign. I don't know what I would have done, I have to be careful.

Hopefully it wasn't your skin color, they are probably just rude like that anyways. Seems like lots of people are just plain grouchy and rude these days.
I often feel discriminated against for being disabled and on assistance and medicaid. I think everyone is mad about money problems.

Minnesota has a grand one. I like the jousting. I liked the men in tights - ha ha. I don't remember anybody having much of a chance to be nice or mean to anybody, everybody just walks around. If you tip a musician they will be very nice, for sure.

I went to one in St. Louis when I was there on business. I enjoyed the experience.
I've gone twice. Mainly to see the hot glass blowing workshop and because my friends begged me. I find them boring. And expensive. And I hate having to use those port-o-potties. Gross.

they are really boring, but i've been on the elephants at mine! and i like the watch the belly dancers. ours comes here in march and it's already tooooooooooo hot. i've been 2 or 3x and i only go, because it's mike's sister's favorite place and her bday is march 9th, so we go for her birthday present lol.
they have yummy fooooooooood, though!!

I don't know if it's the one you go to or your personal interest. I know I am the most enthusiastic of my family at going, but the Pa Faire is one of the larger ones and though became more commercial, they draw performers from all over the East Coast who are very entertaining in my opinion.

I would love to have you see the ones we have here in Pennsylvania, and in Maryland. The actors and visitors are all for the most part nice. Maybe the people there are stuck up purists or re-creationsists who won't accept anything but total historical reality.
It's a show, in the beginning it was much more real but with the way people are with law suits they had to cover them selves. There are performers of all race, and background. They make a reason for them to be there. They embrace the little differences as well as the historical references. It's a show and it's there for people to have fun.
I'm going to post the videos I have from some of the shows here. I hope you can see some of the fun I had at the Pensylvania Renaissance Fair.

The one close to us moved further away, it was always a lot of fun and I loved the glass blowers and cool stuff.
There are always belly dancers in cute costumes (sometimes not so cute bodies, but hey - it's all in fun) lots of unusual and artistic stuff and lots of ladies with their boobies on display.

Sorry you had a bad experience, it was probably just the green with envy ladies:)

The knights jostling were a bit lame but still fun, but there was one wash woman act - that was bawdy and great fun, they put on the best show.
A couple of the musicians were good too.

Ishbel is right, the ones they do in Europe are different.

Its held annually at camp atterbury and the people there are all a clique.
I have pften wondered if the mindsat for such things can make them assholes?

sorry u had a bad time, it can be fun to dress up and pretend to be back in time, we have the king richard fair here. I always go with a group of people and we hang out together, its hard going somewhere, where there is a little click of people.

Every R Fair I've gone was so filled with nerds... who wouldn't dare be rude to anyone. lol
Sorry you had a bad experience. Maybe you had preconcieved notions and felt uncomfortable before attending too? Somtimes body language can make people act defensively.

I have not ever been to an actual Ren Fest, but we have a small Scottish Festival locally. It is expensive, there are a lot of commercial vendors. There is also an emphasis on genealogy and family crests that is interesting. There are various types of musical performers and dancers. There used to be a live steel performance (my son was in it.) There are also Highland Games and the kirking of the Tartan, cloggers, harpists, folksingers and a British Car show. You can dress up or not as you choose. We have two church colleges in town (read International Students with various skin colors) and so seem to go a little lighter on the prejudices.

I've never been to a Renn Faire, but I've been to Highland Games before. They were great...it was a really windy day and I spent it sitting on the grass watching the men in kilts play their games :)

Even though the founding organization, The Society for Creative Anachronism started in Berserkely, I have not yet attended a Renn Faire. I have several friends who are regular participants.
That part of history never really interested me. If more into Gay '90s and Roaring Twenties periods. The music was better. ;o)
Many of the women who are involved in Renn Faire are not particularly attractive and are often overweight (back then you needed a fat woman to keep you warm LOL) so I'm firmly convinced that they were jealous of your youth and beauty.
