Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino's latest film that takes place in World War II France, led the weekend box office results for August 21 - 23 with $37.6 million. This was the highest opening ever for a Tarantino film. District 9, the alien thriller that is getting very positive reviews, was knocked out of the first place spot after its' strong opening weekend as it dropped 50%, raking in $18.9 million over the weekend. It brings the total gross for District 9 to $73.5 million.
The number three spot went to G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra ($12.5 million; $120.5 million total); followed by The Time Travelers' Wife at number four ($10.0 million; $37.4 million total);and Julie & Julia at number five ($9.0 million; $59.3 million total).
