What is it about a place that "draws you in" and when you see it, you just know you could be quite comfortable there for a time? Last Thursday, after attending the Gay Carnival in downtown Provincetown, Nick and I started walking back down Commercial Street to the West End where the swimming pool at the Provincetown Inn awaited our hot, tired bodies. The pavement was really hot and crowds of people were in the street and so we decided to walk back by way of the shore. The tide was out and as we cut through an alley, we discovered the most romantic place....Captain Jack's.

Captain Jack's is a rambling, rustic, colorful building on a wharf stretching out over water. From the deck, you can see an extraordinary view of the tidal flats and harbour. Some of the units are rented and others are condos. Later, I learned that Jack's Wharf was built as storage for fishermen at the turn of the 19th century. Later, Eugene O'Neil used it for summer housing as well as a performance space for his Experimental Playwrights Theatre. Still later, it became a speakeasy known as the Circus Bar. Today, Captain Jack's Wharf is a dozen condominiums and are rented out for a week or the madcap summer season.

I loved the names on the various units...."Sunrise", "Windswept", "Hesperus-Spindrift". There is even an "Australis" and a "Venus" and "Borealis". I can just imagine what it would be like to stay in one of these cabins for the summer....listening to the sounds of the tide and feeling the cool ocean breezes as I slept.

Nick checking the place out.

"Bob, you have to see this end cabin. You would love it!." So I walked down to the end unit....and I fell in love.

Imagine, just imagine renting this last unit for the summer season.

Leaving Captain Jack's we speculated what it would cost to rent one of the units for a week and thought we should start saving our money and perhaps come next summer spend a week here. The following day I got an email from Nick....she had already googled Captain Jack's and found out the far end condo was for sale......$995,000....a wee bit pricey for our pocketbooks. But heck, maybe Tom Gerace could buy the place and be a Medici for all the writers and poets on Gather and provide them with a week stay here. What a fine idea that is......what do you think?

Last time I was in P-town was a long time ago, but I had been fortunate to see Key West in June and P-Town in September. The two are very similar, they have the same local entertainment crews that travel to Key West in the winter.
We have been meaning to take the fast boat, but ....so far....not happened...even more difficult with two kids in college and scheds.
I love unique hideaways....
I wonder if there is a weekly price. A daily price.
Oh bother. Never mind.
By having a king size life jacket on.
I am sorry, I know waterfront living is expensive, but give me a break!!!
Renting it for a week would probably cost more than I make in a month.
I will have to admit, it is a rather cute place.
Hmmm, what if we all pooled our Gather points for, well, maybe forever? Gloucester, I've been there after 1959 and Rockport is great too and it's right there - there's a Gather member who lives in Gloucester, nice, very nice person, kenntab.gather.com, know him? I think I've got that right.

The whole pier is so colorful. It would be great fun to spend some time there.
Elizabob, this was a delightful photo essay!
Speaking of Ted, sorry to see him go. Do you want to go to Hyannisport and put a message down.
Nick
As for Ted...sad day for Massachusetts. I have been reading about all the legislation he was behind...no wonder they call him a "lion" in the Senate.
