When I first started social networking, I started out with Facebook. Before I started Gathering I was using Mylot. I learned of Gather through Mylot. When I first joined facebook, I liked the idea of being able to use your cellphone on it to respond to everyone. I though that was very innovative of them to add that feature. The only problem was when I first joined Facebook, they were not associated with my mobile carrier (T-mobile).
Later when I was introduced to Gather, I felt overwhelmed and a bit lost. Then I started connecting with many of you and found a place to consider as a virtual home so to speak. I started moving my content from Facebook to Gather, since after all Gather was giving me something in return for sharing it. I even told my friends about Gather, my MIL even joined Gather so she could see the videos we posted of the kids cooking, going various places, etc... So that was cool.
Facebook and Gather have the same basic funtionalities, the differences in my opinion are:
Facebook is a trend setter and started first, I read a poll and it said that FB has 250,000,000 users.
Twitter it's rival has a mere 25,000,000, but they gained that over a matter of 6 months (my wife uses this service, I don't, so I won't give an opinion about it). I will say though its pretty neat, that my wife was able to win 4 tickets to Thomas and Friends, that we took the kids to. Meaning we only had to pay for one ticket that was only $12, we wouldn't have gone at that price for all 5 of us though a total of $48 saved!
Gather only has around 650,000 (if my memory serves me correctly) users. Wow. I don't quite understand how if you are getting the same product/service and are giving something in return, much like a rebate from purchasing a particular product from your favorite store.
So what makes Gather my choice of relating to everyone else. Well the incentives I receive in return of course. It's the whole reason why I stopped using facebook exclusively. Plus I really dislike some of the ADS that are on FACEBOOK. I was there last night, and I saw this ad, of the woman laying down in her nighty, and the caption at the bottom of it read "are you looking?" What? At least they give you the option of giving the ad a thumbs up (meaning you like it) or a thumbs down (meaning you don't) I gave that ad a thumbs down! But recently Facebook has added my cellphone carrier to it's repittrore so now I can skip the ads and all of that JAZZ. I can even multitask, so when one of my friends sends a post to my cellphone, I can respond or just say nothing.
That is one featured I'd like to see Gather come up with. Not necessarily being able to post your entire article on here although some posts are short enough to be able to be posted with 140 characters or less. But rather after you make a post, then being able to at least being able to respond to your friends responds or whoever responds to your posts. I think that would enhance participation. What do you think?

I am on Twitter and Facebook but Gather has pretty much replaced them. The only reason I have a facebook account is for Swag Bucks stuff.
I did not know Gather has 650,000 members. That's a lot! I suppose a lot of them are inactive now.

I like Gather more and on here more than the others.
Facebook is more the younger crowd... it's just for connecting to people where the assumption is that you generally already know them. I just use it for short messages, or to "keep up" with friends I wouldn't otherwise for lack or time or desire to correspond via email.
Gather seems to be an older crowd (than the majority on Facebook, I mean) & most people use it to share articles or info... very diff. from Facebook.
I use Twitter also... I really never did until I got my iPhone and now I can post blurbs or pics on the go. I like to use Twitter sometimes because it really is annoying when someone posts to FB all day long, but that's what Twitter is for! I mainly "follow" local business to keep up on specials, discounts, & contests they are running.
And I agree that the ads on Facebook are irritating, but the ads on Gather irritate me also so I just have to tune them out, lol :)
I use twitter although it's so screwy these days half of what I try to put in never loads in
