I'd like to share a very nice, public domain site called LibriVox. It's run as a free podcast archive of books/stories in the public domain. The readers are volunteers. According to the site:
"LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and publish the audio files on the internet. Our goal is to record all the books in the public domain."
Books which meet this criteria have a publish date of no later than 1923 (I think). If you're looking for classics, you'll find them here. I've listened to the recordings and they're quite nice.
LibriVox is also looking for volunteers to contribute their voices to the project. Recording yourself speaking not as intimidating as it may seem at first. All you need are an internet connection, a halfway decent microphone headset and a free audio editing piece of software called Audacity.
LibriVox is a great service. There's a very supportive community and lots of help and encouragement for those who'd like to try their hand at recording. For the rest, it's a great source of free, good literature! I'm particularly fond of their Edgar Allen Poe stories. And, where else can you get David Copperfield to go?
