Rainbow Beetle-- Anyone know him?

While down with my family on Long Beach Island, NJ, we discovered this beetle on my neice's hat. It flew off but landed on some nearby plants, and I managed to take some good shots of it. (And some of the first macro shots I took with the new camera!)

Can anyone tell me what kind of beetle this is? It was beautiful; the coloration was unreal!

It is pretty, kinda like a cross between a June Bug and a Japanese Beetle,lol. sorry, i'm clueless. good macro shots!

I've seen a couple of them for the first time this year. They do look like the Japanese beetles except for the color. I can tell you that they were having a good time eating my zinnias and green bean plants. So a couple of them got squished. :op

I saw one like that for the first time at Sawgrass Lake Park a couple of months back.

It's strange that so many of us have seen this beetle for the first time this year. I hope it does not become as destructive as the Japanese beetles were many years ago.
