Yesterday we decided to attend the 1st day of the 2009 Erie County Fair. Before going, we found out that last weeks torrential rains had caused the fairgrounds to be very muddy and that most of the lots would be closed but they had set up a FREE shuttle from a nearby college.
So we get to the fairgrounds, pay our gate fee of $2.00 each (1st day) and start by watching the Swifty Swine baby pig races! Those baby pigs are adorable and always a highlight for us.
There is so much to do, way too much to see, lots of unhealthy food to consume and goods to be purchased.
So we start cruising around and visit the new http://www.borninbuffalo.net tent for T-Shirt offerings, I settle for a Born in Buffalo shirt in the Buffalo Sabres colors of white, blue & gold, but the "My city smells like Cherrios" shirt is mighty tempting also.
We then hit the New York State lottery building. We only won $6 on our scratch off tickets, but we also choose which tickets to buy carefully because there are prizes for that too! We walk away with our $6 winnings, 2 rubber skunks, a free ticket, a T-Shirt, a travel mug and a beach towel. Not a bad haul!
After crusing through the vendors in the buildings, we are now hungry, walking around to find what we want to eat (everything) but find a local Cajun restaurant that is selling Gumbo and Jambalaya. Ok, this is good! Not fried in grease or anything. We top it off with a pepsi and we have a winner. We passed up all kinds of interesting items, fried dough, pizza, blooming onions, fried twinkies, italian sausage sandwiches, roast beef, chicken BBQ's etc.
Then on to more browsing, people watching and more. At 8:00, they announce tonights FREE concert event:
1964 The Tribute, A Beatles tribute band, so we head on over to the grandstand and get a great, fun concert.
We decide to leave a little early to catch the shuttle bus back to the parking lot. The line was very long, but we can still hear the music. The buses arrive and we pack into them just in time to see the 10:00 fireworks going off!
All this, and we never even got to see the new Sea Lion Splash, The great American Duck races, How to give a pig or cow or chicken a bath, The Summer Love parade, the Hippie stiltwalker or the walking Tree Man. I guess theres always next year!
