It's almost time for DragonCon and I can hardly wait! I'm working Media Relations this year, which should mean that at least at night I should have more time for panels. I'm also on two panels in the Sci Fi Lit room, one about Dan Simmons and one about Page to Screen (what books we would like to see made into movies.) If my work schedule allows it, I may be on a Ghost Hounds panel with Patrick (Burns) too, in the X Track.
This will be my 13th year on staff, but my first in Media Relations. I like to float. I've worked in registration, kids' track, Tolkein track, security, video track, Space/Science track, Sci Fi Literature (which I helped start,) and now Media Relations. Everything is different and interesting, and I like to experience new things. Next year, I probably won't be on staff, since I will probably have a press badge myself.
It's going to be one fantastic year for the Con. We have both Patrick Stewart and Leonard Nimoy! Charlaine Harris and Sherrilyn Kenyon! Adam Savage from Mythbusters! Jason, Grant, Steve, Tango, and Joe from Ghost Hunters (I'm excited about that one because I've not met Joe and Tango yet.) Gene Wolfe! James Marsters! Gareth David-Lloyd! TERRY GILLIAM!
I'm going to try to make it to Rocky Horror this year. I usually don't, because I actually work the con and that means I'm usually exhausted before midnight and often have to be up by 9 or so in the morning. But this year, Barry Bostwick is at the Con and even though I don't know if he will, wouldn't it be so cool if he came to Rocky?? The original Brad?? That would be too awesome...
There are heaps of other guests; there will be 30,000 plus people all having fun, spred across 4 hotels (last year I never made it to the Sheraton) and costumes everywhere. I'll see people I never get to see outside of the con. I'll get too little sleep, be broke as always, and have a blast. I always do. I would not trade DragonCon for Christmas and New Years together.
This year, our hotel room is costing $129 a night! To stay in a Red Roof Inn! But I got that reservation in March and everything else is full. Last year, we stayed in Tucker and took MARTA, but it meant we had to leave earlier than we wanted to, and I hate the escalator at Peachtree Station a lot. (I don't like escalators and this one is very long. i was pleased to learn that I have friends who feel the same way.)
I just can't wait! Only 24 more days!
