Which of These 100 Books Have YOU Read?

ok, here is how I did-
set one through ten- SEVEN- tied with you there.
set eleven through twenty- FIVE- ha, I beat you!
set twenty one through thirty- FOUR- tied again.
Set thirty one through forty- THREE- beat you by one. Problem- "The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe" is book one of "The Chronicles of narnia"- so the list is messed up there.
Set forty one through fifty- HOT DOG, I have read five of those, yeay for me.
Set fifty one through sixty- FIVE. I sort of skimmed love in the Time of Cholera too, but I am not counting that.
Set Sixty one through seventy- YOU GOT ME- the only one of those i have read is The Lovely Bones- and I am still not sure how I feel about that book. Not a big fan of Sebold, you could say.
Seventy set- only one I read all the way through is Dracula. That's embarrassing. Well, I have read almost every that Bill Bryson ever wrote, Notes on a small island is just one I have not gotten around to. Although I have not read Germinal, I did read L'assomoir by Zola back in college- IN FRENCH. Can't remember much except it was very tragic and this group of hard working lower middle class people in Paris were all falling prey to alcoholism for various reasons. Zola is the French equivalent of Upton Sinclair pointing out social evils, right?
Eighties set-SIX- ha- I even enjoyed Possession though I must admit parts of that book were extremely hard to get through. The slam bang ending made it all worth while though. Christmas Carol, every word perfect. Charlottes Web- an amazing children's book that is really probably more for adults. Sherlock Holmes stories, great fun for me when I was in high school. Guess that makes me a total dweeb.
Nineties- four, tied with you again. I enjoyed Watership Down, escapism, epic adventure of a group of rabbits. Three musketeers, not that good, but I did enjoy it as just a readable adventure. Hamlet? I think that is probably his greatest tragedy. Much ado about nothing is his best comedy, that should have been on the list too. But it's better to see them performed, they are not novels, they are plays. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Roald Dahl is a landmark of children's literature. J.K. Rowling owes him alot for some of the things in her bag of tricks.

My total is 41. That's not bad for a Yank. The truth is, I have gravitated to British literature more than American literature for much of my life though I read and enjoy both.

I think that the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mar Twain should have been on the list, but no list can please everybody.

I read this wrong...I have read 59 of these.

I only had ten for sure, and some I think I read cliff-notes, or condensed versions of for school. Plus a couple I'm just not sure of anymore, LOL.

A total of 43 from your list, though I have to point out that there are some duplications.
For instance, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the first volume of The Chronicles of Narnia, and Hamlet is one of The Complete Works of Shakespeare.

I also read the Dumas and de Saint-Exupery books in French, in high school; followed by Camus, in college.

I too would argue for the inclusion of Mark Twain's works, as well as William Faulkner's...but then I have a particular fondness for Southern authors, since I have lived in the region most of my life.

I do admit to being disappointed that I never could make it through Dostoyevsky (sp?) or Tolstoy though my son tells me that the key to reading Russian literature is to realize that the entire plot is a circular soap opera...he was the only student to ace the APAC English exam his senior year in high school and there were several students who would not have passed without his particular encouraging brand of tutoring. I may have to try again with Tolstoy and D______________evsky. (I'm going to have to look that up. Spelling is a particular peeve of mine.)

Am also very good at crossword puzzles, I believe this is because of my extensive reading.
Pretty much everything I have read, my children and grandchildren have read or have had read to them.

I agree Chris that Huckleberry Finn and I might add Tom Sawyer should have been on that list, and also I can think of many others that I have read and might be included.

Erin S. your list of those great books have lasted the test of time and we're all better off from those author' inspirations and gifts to the world. Unfortunately, there are also many hidden diamonds in the rough that need to be discovered. On Amazon alone and their 27,000,000 books listed, that would surely be a daunting task.

I believe this is a list of english works, so twain wouldn't make the list.

Good point about diamonds in the rough, Chuck. I've reviewed many a book on Amazon and been the first reviewer.

There are some U.S. authors on the list, Sheryl. Salinger and E. B. White, to name 2.

I didn't count Shakeshpere shince I only read the tradgedies. That was a very thick and boring tome. Should count as at least 10 or more books.

the bible, the lovely bones and little women

I haven't read The Lovely Bones, but I understand they are making a movie of it soon.

I have read 73 of them! I have fond memories of each too.....
Are you ever "sad" when a book is over? I always swell with so many feelings when a book comes to an end; sadness, pride, excitement (if there are sequels), concern for the characters..... (yeah, I'm silly!)

Rarely am I sad when I finish a book. I'm ready to move on to the next one!

Hopefully the movie The lovely bones will be as good as the book. My mother was very disappointed with the movie Gone with the wind, she always said the book was much better.

I like the movie, but the book IS much better.

I have read 51 of these books and seen over 40 movies based on these books or the series a books is part of.

As for the LOTR (Lord of the Rings) movies many have seen the trilogy but how many remember the old animated version of The Hobbit?

I haven't seen it, but my local library has a copy.

I've only read maybe three of these novels.
And, watched the movie about the rest of these books.
Gone with the wind, is my favorite movie of all time.
Never read the book though.

It's a great book. Scarlett has another child in the book who isn't in the movie at all!

I've read 42, and I'm in the process of reading Love in the Time of Cholera (in Spanish) now.

That's great! I've heard wonderful things about Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I own a copy of his Living to Tell the Tale, but I don't know when I'll get around to reading it.

You've read a few of Jane Austen's novels. Did you enjoy them? I love Wuthering Heights, so I suspect I might like Austen as well, if I gave her a try.

Austen can be alot of fun, if you're into those period pieces. I actually prefer Galsworthy (The Forsyte Saga), which is I guess more modern, and much more intricate in plot and characterization.

IIRC I've read 55 of them. I answered the questionnaire a while back. Some of them I know I'll never read because I've formed negative opinions of the authors from reading other stuff they wrote. e.g. Mitch Albom, Salman Rushdie, Joseph Conrad. Others like Moby-Dick I sincerely wish I hadn't read. :)

I think everyone should read George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. I suspect that many modern readers haven't unless they were forced to in school.

Heart of Darkness is a great book!

In case you think the list is all very serious, there are quite a few very funny books on it in addition to the obvious entries like Pride and Prejudice. Madame Bovary, A Confederacy of Dunces, Cold Comfort Farm, and Lolita are all extremely witty.

Virginia Woolf's books didn't make the list, but she is extraordinarily witty and very funny, too.

From your list, I have read exactly one: Treasure Island. The Woolf book I adore is Orlando.

I have read 71 of these books, some more than once. But then I have a degree in English so I had to read a lot of them.4 more are currently sitting on a shelf here waiting for me to get time for them.

71 is a very high number, almost three quarters!

I almost got half, at 46: but I also noted that several of them were included in collections as well as individuals. And I also read a lot of them in high school. A lot of them I've not even heard of. I wonder how many I can read over the next year?

I got 75, but I sure do need to read the others!

78, however, as someone else commented, there are a couple of duplications - Shakespeare, for instance.

I've read all his plays - also love his sonnets! At my school it was a Shakespeare play per term. We also managed some great theatre trips, particularly during the Edinburgh Festival in August - there are generally at least two Shakespeare plays on the long list of shows. I remember seeing Jane Asher play Ophelia one summer.

I've read A Midsummer Night's Dream (and played the part of Peter, cross-dressing!), Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello. I think that's all.

Ahh... but here in the UK, Shakespeare is considered THE Bard (although we Scots would dispute it and say that Rabbie Burns is THE bard!) an therefore must be studied, at length and in depth (in other words, 'done to death'!)

Carles, sad because I always stressed the importance of reading to my daughter. When I saw this(not just these books) I realized that I have not read all the books I have wanted to.
