Seeking a truce

with conditions.

I know that you know

I propose it

between you and I only.

I know that you know

on any other front

I will still fight you with every means at my disposal

to a bitter end if need be.

I concede only

that you and I can sit together.

If I must know you

You will also know me.

Still a formidable opponent.

equal compromising are what make a relationship get past the bumpy bits. a truce with conditions is a marvelous way to put that. it's how wars are ended and business stalemates, so why not in relationships?

I like your conversation with pain, and I think it's helpful to set it down as you have so ably done.

I had a similar conversation and captured it in a poem nearly 40 years ago. I no longer have the poem, but I remember the opening, "Pain demands the response, Me, Me, Me! At the time, I wondered how I could make a contribution to life when physical pain seemed to control my life. And I so wanted to make a difference. Later I had about 20 years of relief, but I've had quite a bit of pain again in the last seven years.

You have a wonderful attitude and approach to life. In the long run, pain will have to bow to it, to you.

I am so proud of you, and the way that you continue to fight this thing that has taken so much from you. These flare ups are a terrible thing for you to endure but as always, you confront them with such a strength of spirit. And of course, I will walk beside you through it all.

Deb, this is an intelligent and poetic way to approach the veil of pain. I've been toiling under it for two weeks now, and consider myself strong but this has brought me to a whimper. God speed, dear one, you cope with grace.

Thank you, Wes. That truly warms my heart. I aspire to it. I slept under the willow tree in the back yard and often hoped I would somehow gain that, grow like that.
