February 2009 - What are you reading?
| February 17, 2009 04:45 PM EST -- I find myself stumbling between fiction and non these days. I just received four books in the mail - two on gardening, one cookbook, and one book on making cheese. But oddly in the winter months, . . . more |

This is a partial close-up of an art poster in my home - it has as much relevance to this article as gather's search tool does to actually finding something you look for!:)

Yes, I understand the concept of searching by relevance!
BUT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY
IF I SEARCH FOR MARIANNE K.
I GET MARIANNE COMBS
Well - that is my rant for today!
May your gathering go smoother than mine:)

Rose,
In order to search for member names more accurately, you need to enter the name in quotation marks, like this:
"marianne k."
Now why don't they impart this little morsel of information about using quotation marks right on the search page?
Gather treats all search terms as separate words, unless those words are enclosed in quotes. Thus, while you wanted to look for marianne k., the search tool was actually looking for all content containing EITHER the word marianne OR the letter K.
I was just seething this morning, because regardless whether it is an article - even if I have the title - it doesn't give me what I'm looking for.
I agree with your thoughts Rose. Gather should add a 'search tips' module or other information on the search pages to help members navigate the confounding process of searching for 'stuff.
