Salinas - Thirties - No One Cared

Pop went up with Beck to work around Salinas
before he met Beck's wife's sister mom.

Times were hard
Beck and Oz worked in the fields
Beck ran a crating machine
and Oz ran workers in the field

Pop worked in the field and
learned to run the crating machine
from Beck

Beck and Pop went downtown one night
Oz didn't go as he said that
Pop and Beck were up to no good

Downtown Salinas one night

This was after a boat load of men
from the Philippines
went to work in the fields

This was the thirties
a boat load of men from the Philippines
to work in the fields for a quarter a day

The farmers were broke
labor there was cheap
so here comes the boat

Pop and Beck were walking
up behind a bunch from the Philippines
downtown one night

Two by two they pounded
Philippine heads together
till they walked through the crowd
laid out now on the ground

No one cared

They saw the Sheriff
He watched
as he drove slowly by down the street
on the opposite side of the street

As they went into the bar
they saw the Sheriff
slowly turn around and start back

They knew the Sheriff
The Sheriff knew them

No one cared

They went in
had a few beers
back to work the next day

No one cared

Oz said later
I knew you two were up to no good
I couldn't go with you
as whose  Philippinos need to work for me
