Mystery Marker

On Tuesday I posted this picture for this week's Photo Scavenger Hunt - Graveyard Edition theme (Graveyard ABC).   

A couple people had asked what the letter was and who the grave belonged to.   The letter is D.   I went back to the cemetary this morning and the grave belongs to William Donohue (1852 - 1899).  I found a couple more headstones with a letter inscribed on them.  Many of them had the letter on one side and the name on the other as this one did.

Thank you very much JoAnn. Very nice of you. Makes you wonder, if he died of natural causes because of his age. I would imagine something like that cost a pretty penny back in those days.

I think you were the first to respond. I thought it was a D too but when a couple of people asked I wasn't sure.

I love the old grave markers, they are all so interesting. The modern ones just have no class,all look alike.

1852 was a good year. I remember it well. 1899, not so good.

That's interesting and I am glad you found out who it belonged to. I went grave hunting at the end of last week and found some very old gravestones that could not be read. I'm waiting for the people to call me back so hopefully I can put a name with some of them.
