I'm studying workplace bullying these days. I didn't have a name for it during the first year and some months of happenings which were initiating and educating me rather painfully. Then just last week I came across the Workplace Bullying Institute site online. There were the symptoms, roles, terminology, and studies which validated my experience and helped me feel less isolated and discouraged. I learned that "Target" is not the same as "victim," and that it's typical for workplace bullies to target co-workers like me who are just doing a good job and happy in their workplace (used to be happy).
On the one hand I'm grateful for the experience that has led to a much better understanding of certain human social patterns - this allows me to recognize and help others in the same situation. On the other hand, I'm ready for it to be over. The ideal would be for everyone involved to say - "Oh! Workplace bullying - Oh dear! Let's all get conscious and stop this drama!" But people and offices have their own rates of growth and change, and that must be respected. Bullying the bully is not an option if it's a raise in consciousness we're after.
My hope is to turn the experiences of the last year and a half into better awareness for the whole system: better guidelines for supervisors and co-workers, better training for supervisors, and questionnaires which can help in co-worker bully-target and mobbing situations. That's a tall order, but doable, I believe. There are so many dysfunctional workplaces, with an estimated 37 % of workers being targeted by bullies. I've experienced first-hand the physical, psychological, emotional and social effects of this phenomenon. I've worked with my prayer group and used mantras, the St. Francis Prayer for Peace; I've used EFT and have been seeing a Bio-Energetic Synchronization Technique practitioner, and all have helped - BUT there's more! I'm definitely ready to transform it all into something useful and helpful for the whole.
Now I'm hopeful that other Gather members with similar experience may have stories to tell, help to share - and that we can all benefit from better understanding through each other.
The Questionnaire:
- Are you now or have you ever been targeted by a workplace bully?
- If not, have you witnessed bullying in your workplace? Did affect you? If so, how?
- Have you attempted to help a co-worker who's being targeted? How? Was it effective, or were you targeted as a result?
- Does your workplace have adequate personnel and management guidelines? Are they followed or ignored?
- If you have been a bully's Target, have you experienced physical, psychological, emotional or social health effects? Please describe.
Note: The similarity between being the Target of a workplace bully and being a Target because of race or gender or any other reason, is great. This article from the EFT site's archives will interest some who are suffering from PTSD from similar situations, or who know someone who is: How Racisim Can Lead to Health Problems and What to Do About It, by Paul Zelizer.

I'm thinking you may have a major article or even series of your own on this topic.
Thanks and good luck with ending the dysfunction at your workplace.
It's a real test of integrity. And courage.
May you be happy, may you be free, may you be truly connected with your authentic self, and may you benefit all beings.
BREATHE.
There are so many, many, many nurses and other healthcare workers who suffer as you have - and then become the victims of the system in another way, as their health is compromised and they find themselves paying out the wazoo for medicines to try to regain lost health, when really there needs to be some way to stop the bullying and restore the dignity of the workers.
