On our noon news today, they said that a study shows that 67% of Americans eat out at least once a week and 37% once a day! Perhaps that 37% is because people eat out at lunch time while at work?
You know, I don't think that people in 1929 went to restaurants to eat...unless it was to beg. My mother, who was born in 1929, talked about how she and her brothers would go to restaurants years later as teens and share a cup of hot water in which they put some the ketchup that was on the table. There were also packets of crackers on the table. So they basically ate free or for the few pennies some restaurants charged for a cup of hot water. Sometimes they brought their own tea bag and ordered two cups of hot water. (And they did always leave some kind of tip for the waitress.)
Who is going out to each that much? Don't people realize that it's cheaper to eat at home? And cheaper to pack lunches for work?

I can get a Jr. Whopper for $1.00.
91 percent of those who can work are working.
That was not so in the years after 1929.
In 1992, I was living in Corpus Christi, Texas.
16 percent of the people there were unemployed at that time.
I still found work and in fact had job offers.
I had a job offer last week.
I see the news but that same news is not what I see in the real world.
Yes, I see homes up for sale, but then, there are always homes up for sale.
The economy is bad, but not THAT bad.
It is starting to get better though.
In the mid-80s, my ex's daughter lived in a neighborhood were 90% of the homes had been foreclosed on and were empty. I don't know of any neighborhoods like that now.
I like that. 91% of peope who can work are working. That's a great attitude.
My cousin lived half of his life in Canada (and in the worker's comp board there) and half in the US. He told me last year that in Canada 10% unemployment is normal. After he said that, I looked up figures for other countries. Some have unemployment numbers higher than that as "normal".
Marilyn, I'm sure if you go to Michigan you can find more than a few neighborhoods like that.
Now that we are here we are included as well each Friday....I watch over $60 go out of the pocket the last 2 weeks.
Always being poor, it about makes me sick....just knowing how little it would have cost to eat at home and use that money for something else.
George Vreeland Hill .
We've gone through times when 97% of the workers had jobs! But regardless of the numbers, if you are in the unemployed group, and cannot find work, times are tough for you.
One just may be surprised on what they can accomplish. Someone is hiring and a candidate must distinguish themselves from the rest of the applicants.
Today I ate out 3 times, I normally budget for this and know some places that are very reasonable. I worked a 10 hour day and didn't have time to come home and whip something up.
