Hmmm... How Many Worms Can I Fit in My Bill???

Oh boy, oh boy... look at all those meal worms that my human "mom" has put out for me to feed my babies! I better get as many as I can, before that pesky little wren comes along and steals them.

Okay... here's one...

A few more...

Now how many babies do I have to feed...

Maybe if I line them up real neat, I can get them all in one go...

That's better...

How about a few more...

Hmmm. Still doesn't seem like enough...

Oh, maybe just a few more will do it...

I hate to leave any for that worm-stealing wren...

If I pack them in real tight, I think I can get them all...

Gosh, I just don't know if I can fit any more in my beak...

Let me just try one more time...

Yes, I got them all!

Oops... dropped one...

Oh, forget that one... here comes the wren. I'm out of here!!!!

Great photos! I'm reminded of feeding peanuts to a crow as a kid. The peanuts kept piling up apparently in its crop until some were at the back of its bill, and still it was begging for more.

LOL Since this female did not nest in my bluebird house (we had another bluebird pair earlier in the summer in our box), I'm not sure how many babies she had. But I'm pretty sure the two juveniles that have shown up with their parents begging for food at the dish of worms for the past several weeks, are this same female's babies. The two juveniles are able to feed on their own now and don't need their parents, but they are still coming around every day looking for their handout of meal worms. It has been delightful watching them grow. As for the wren, well, there wasn't one there that day, but yesterday one of the juveniles and a juvenile Carolina wren were battling over the dish of worms! One worm that was dropped on the deck rail managed to crawl under the side of the dish. Both the bluebird and wren were trying so hard to reach it, it was just so darn cute!! I got some great photos of the event... so stay tuned, Jennifer!

I used to have bluebirds and feed mealies too...
I sure miss them.
So far no luck here at the new place in the village...

The meal worms aren't any problem at all, S R. You just keep the container in your frig and put out some in a dish as you need them. The bluebirds and wrens love them!

Amazing Sue. I can't do this because of the sparrows. Excellent photos. I am amazed at how many they stuff in their little mouth, sort of like a squirrel!

Yes, it is amazing how many worms the birds can pick up with their tiny bills. But it sure saves them alot of time flying back and worth to the nest! LOL

Yes it does, a very smart thing to do, and they may not be there when they get back. The sparrows are a never ending battle for me. Geez, I wish they would just go away.

It's funny, but I've never had a problem with sparrows. Certain times of year I get a group of chipping sparrows in the winter months that eat seed from under my feeders, but aren't around during the spring and summer when the bluebirds are breeding. Too bad you can't get rid of the sparrows somehow so you could feed the bluebirds.
