I saw the doctor Friday and got both good news and bad news.
The bad news is that I am a mess. Not only do I have an ulcer of the esophagus, I had narrowing of the esophagus which the doctor dilated. No wonder it always felt like food was stuck in my throat. But that's not all that was during the endoscopy. He also found, acute and chronic gastritis, reflux esophagitis (irritation of the esophagus from GERD), severe spasms of the muscle at the bottom of the stomach that controls the flow of food from your stomach to your intestions, and acute inlfammation of the first part of my intestines. All these things explain many problems that I've been having such as nausea, loss of appetite, difficulty eating and hoarseness.
The good news is that the biopsies all came back clean. No abnormal cells of any kind. Best news of all no special diet! I get to keep drinking coffee!!!! The only dietary advice I was given was to cut back on coffee and spicy foods. He also gave me two prescriptions. As it turns out one isn't covered by my insurance company so I didn't pick that one up. The drug store will call Monday to find out if a different version of the drug that is covered by my insurance company can be substituted. After all, there is a big difference between 237.00 and 5.00, especially when you are already taking 13 other drugs on a daily basis.
Once again I urge you to get checked by a doctor is you suffer from frequent nausea and/or heartburn. You don't have to suffer the way I have if the problem is caught early. GERD is a serious condition that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
