Two weeks ago I had an endoscopy done and found out I have an ulcer of the esophagus. The most fequent cause of such an ulcer is chronic GERD. I rarely get heartburn, but have suffered from frequent nausea for years. Today I go to the doctor to get my biopsy results to be sure there is only an ulcer and to start treatment for the ulcer and GERD. Since it is now chronic, because I never made a connection between nausea and GERD I will most likely have to follow the treatment plan for the rest of my life.
The treatment plan involves an antibiotic for the bacteria that causes ulcers, proton pump inhibitors like Prevacid, Protonix, and Prilosec, and a special GERD diet. Here's a list of the most common restrictions of the GERD diet.
Group | Recommend | Avoid |
Milk or milk products | skim, 1% or 2% low-fat milk; low-fat or fat-free yogurt | whole milk (4%), chocolate milk |
Vegetables | all other vegetables | fried or creamy style vegetables*, tomatoes |
Fruits | apples, berries, melons, bananas, peaches, pears | citrus*: such as oranges, grapefruit, pineapple |
Breads & grains | all those made with low-fat content | any prepared with whole milk or high-fat l |
Meat, meat substitutes | low-fat meat, chicken, fish, turkey | cold cuts, sausage, bacon, fatty meat, chicken fat/skin |
Fat, oils | none or small amounts | all animal or vegetable oils |
Sweets & desserts | all itmes made with no or low fat (less than or equal to 3 g fat/serving) | chocolate, desserts made with oils and/or fats |
Beverages | decaffeinated, non-mint herbal tea; juices (except citrus); water | alcohol, coffee (regular or decaffeinated), carbonated beverages, tea, mint tea |
Soups | fat-free or low-fat based | chicken, beef, milk, or cream-based soups |
I will have to be on that diet for the rest of my life, along with the proton pump inhibitor. Also, smoking is strictly prohibitted when you chronic GERD. Also there will have to be periodic endoscopies for monitoring.
Hopefully that is all I have. I'm anxiously waiting for the biopsy results and the exact treatment plan the doctor gives me.
Don't let chronic GERD happen to you. If you get frequent nausea or heartburn get it checked out and treated before it becomes chronic and causes other health problems.

I had no caffeine on my list too but the dr. said I could drink the caffeine free Pepsi, which I did for years.
Good luck and take care.
