What Happened Late Last Night

I was watching Chelsea Lately on E (cable channel) late last night and was laughing really hard!!!  Then, I felt a pop!  and a poke!  inside my mouth!

My permanent retainer on the back row of my bottom teeth came off! 

Ouch!!!

It has been cemented into place since I was 17!  (Nearly 17 years ago!).  I got right up, ran over the bathroom, brushed and flossed!....I haven't felt the back of those teeth w/o the metal in the way since it had been placed there.

I called my sister and a few friends who had braces as a kid too and asked what I should do.

NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM could believe I still had the crazy retainer glued to my teeth for that long!  They all laughed at me!  (and thankfully not mad at me for bothering them at midnight!)

My orthodontist retired several years ago, so I called one from the phone book and spoke with a doctor after the receptionist chuckled at my story!

The orthodontist told me she couldn't believe I had it on for that long; the average is 2 years... maybe up to 5!  It's purpose is to ensure my teeth do not shift after removing the braces.  She suggested I see my dentist and have the rest of the cement removed.  (I have an appointment this upcoming Tuesday).

I've had the metal wires glued to my teeth for 5 years from my braces.

Yeah, the orthodontist laughed at me and couldn't believe that I still had it on after 17 years! I take really care of my teeth! I mean, I didn't wear braces for nothing!

Guess they used some pretty strong cement. That is a long time.

Right?! The cement is still on my teeth too! The metal finally gave way!

Oh, no.... my teeth are still beautiful. They will take the extra cement off next week for me.

totally! My tongue doesn't know what to do! And, the old cement is on two of the teeth too and it's scratchy.

Well, I'd guess your teeth will stay put now, but you might get a night time removable device.

I used to have one; but I took it out to eat pizza and got thrown away! But, I'm going to ask again for another one!
