To Join or Not to Join?

I am debating whether or not to join a book club.  I've never been in a book club and have always wondered if it was for me.  I enjoy reading and love expanding my library.  I would love to meet new people and discuss books.  My work schedule changes week to week so that may be a problem

Have any of you been in a book club?  What were you experiences with book clubs?  Any suggestions of what I should look for and what I should expect?  Where should I look to find various book clubs?

I, too, love to read but haven't joined a book club because I don't want to have to read what the group picks. I want to be the one to pick what I read.

My mother has belonged to a book club for many years. She always starts to read what the group picks, but if she doesn't like it, she doesn't continue to read it.

I joined a all women book club. It was great; good company, good read, good conversation, and good food. We met once a week with each one of us volunteering to host at our place and everyone else bring a dish to share. We picked 4-5 books from many suggestions to read and discuss. The only thing was that the participants. I didn't get attached to any one of them because we didn't have anything in common. That is, their lives were so different from mine; too many bad things happening to them and I didn't want the negativity affecting my positive aura. So, I didn't continue. Also, I didn't have the time to commit to doing the get-together. So, consider: location, purpose, frequency, effort level, commitment level, people, topic, etc. Good luck

I do not like to read so I say No. I say book clubs are bad run from them..... lol

I was recently invited to meet with a club that had chosen my book for the month. It was a large, diverse group of women - doctors, housewives, grad students, young moms, retired world travelers, etc. The real value of the group was fellowship. The book is just an excuse to get together! The discussion was fascinating, though. Reading is a very individual experience. Everyone pictured the characters differently. Each interpreted according to their own experiences. It gave the story more dimensions than I could ever have imagined. It was great!

It must have been a wonderful experience to listen to others discuss your book. That would be a great meeting. Discussing your interpretations with the actual author.

Reading groups are great... they will get you to read books you never otherwise would have noticed!

Go to dearreader.com
Put in your zip code and join. This site will send you a list of libraries in your area that belong to dearreader.com. You can sign up for whatever categories interest you. The possible categories include Business, Romance, Mystery, Classic Novels and Teen.
Every week you get two to three chapters of a book and then you can decide if you want to go to the library, check lt out and read the rest.
It is a great program; it is free and you stop anytime. I have discovered many great books through them.
