It looked like cowardice to some
who carried signs marching
'came out' to families, friends and employers
proud and you must know it.
In retrospect I was wrong
thinking
their acts were only their own needs
unmindful of unnecessary pain
and division
where none need be.
More harm than good I thought
watching the circus.
But, as it turns out
they did it as much for me
as for themselves.
And, I
quietly nursing one Aids victim at a time
having learned to tell the truth when asked directly
did it also for them.

I opposed the War because it was the right thing to do. My Commanding Officer threatened to ship me direct to Vietnam unless I shut up. I didn't but fate intervened ... I was transferred into another unit whose Commanding Officer was sympathetic to my views - and he kept me out of harms way.
Thanks.
