When I was growing up and spending all my free time on horse back I often rode to an old abandoned rock quarry. The rugged terrain, the paths leading to new layers of trees and wild life appealed to me. Occasionally I even rode there at night. I was a place I came to know intimately.
The simple act of getting there involved some risk taking. Cars zipped past on a road that needed crossing, and Shadrack pranced nervously as I waited to make the dash. A mile or so beyond, there were paths so narrow and twisting that brambles intruded, snagging bare skin.
1. Life can't be an adventure without taking some risks.
Trails there were not made for horse riding. Some were so steep that hind hooves slid during the descent.
Shad and I conquered them all..eventually.
2. Know your limits and push after planning.
Years before they had stopped the mining and the earth had reclaimed it. For me, and for wildlife and it was a beloved retreat.
3. You never know what good may come from what you do. Failure may be success in disquise.
I loved riding there after a rain. Raccoon, possum, and deer stories could be found and followed.
4. Look beyond the obvious.
The creek, the trees, the rugged rocks, the cliffs where I would sit for hours surrounded by a world hidden from others, enchanted, and nurtured and strengthened me for the years ahead.
5. Cherish the journey, even the jagged edges, and treacherous cliffs.
What I learned there I have carried with me always.
6. Mine the experiences of your life.

Great reflection.
Is the abandoned rock quarry still there?
I was more concerned with people using it to dump trash on, abandon a vehicle, or have beer parties at, etc. This type of behavior is what I have seen at places where no one is paying attention.
You have found great truths in your wanderings, as have I. Beautiful post, Deb. I'm glad I didn't miss it.
This is a beautiful reflection on life lessons from the patterns of our experience.
