Gatlinburg, TN - Mountain Rainbow Sunset

One afternoon, right at dusk, DH went out on the balcony to watch the sunset.  He called me out quick and told me to grab the camera and the video.  These are the few photos I caught before the sun set.  He took a nice video which dummy me somehow erased.  I was so mad because this was just a beautiful sight like none I've ever seen before.  Maybe those of  you who live in the mountains can tell me, does this happen very often?  We only saw it that one day.  It hadn't rained at all in Gatlinburg, but maybe it rained over the mountains?  I have no idea what caused this effect.

The colors started with dark purple at the top, red, orange then green.

 

We were sad to see it end.

How pretty. Looks like the sun was only partially coming through various areas of the clouds. Cool effect.

Beautiful capture of a lovely scene! Sorry to hear about the video... that happened to me too while on a cruise. I accidentally erased the prettiest sunset I've ever seen in my life. Like you, at least we had some pictures. :)
