OMG! I was watching GMA this morning and they had this story about a woman who injected her face with silicone that she bought on the internet.  She is now scarred for life and has to have multiple surgeries to take care of the scarring.

The story goes that she'd gone in before for silicone injections to a plastic surgeon to have the "fine" lines smoothed out on her face.  Then she got to the point where she couldn't afford the $1000 per treatment anymore.  She looked on the internet and purchased needles and silicone and thought she could do it herself.  She said she had seen the doctor do it so often, that she was sure she knew what she was doing.  Turns out that what she bought wasn't surgical grade silicone, but instead personal lubricant. 

The report went on to say that hundreds of people do this to themselves all the time. 

It makes me sad that our society is so screwed up that we can't see the beauty within.  I'm no beauty.. HELL!! I'm not even what you might call cute or pretty or even good looking.  I'm overweight, have crooked teeth and I hate my hair, but I've learned to live with myself.  Now granted if I had millions of dollars to throw away .. I might consider plastic surgery by a professional who had referrals running out his/her a** but I damn sure AM NOT going to do it myself!

Nancy you're a hoot! First of all I've seen your photo and you are a very pretty woman. Secondly, I'm sure I would not buy some gook from an internet and inject myself! When beauty and youth is the main issue in a society this is what happens.

I know its gone too far when people start doing stuff like this. Thats just too much pressure from ads, movies, entertainers and that other world in which some live.

The things women will do to stay young. It is so nice to aged gracefully why try to prevent it. As long as we are healthy just thank God and keep living.

I have always had a bad self image, though it has improved over the last couple of years, but something like that is unthinkable. I have cringed when I see these people wasting thousands of dollars to fit an image in their mind they will never reach, and when they do, they will constantly have to fight to keep it there. The pressure of ads and models and such is ridiculous. we need to get back to teaching beauty, true beauty radiates from within, you are so right.

Why can't people just accept the way they look? This is absolutely insane. I am not the prettiest face out there, but I sure wouldn't try and change it!
I'd never even have cosmetic surgery. Hey, so what if I have laugh lines? Is smiling a crime, or something? I think my face is way more interesting than it was when I was younger, and no one is taking that away from me. It makes me so incredibly sad when I see someone throwing away her natural beauty with surgery... to fix what? To make you look like someone else? It's not going to fix what's inside, and no one is beautiful if they aren't beautiful inside. We all have what it takes to fix that. Sometimes, it's even free of charge.

this world becomes more insane everyday.......there was a friend of mine who was highly intelligent but sadly very overweight.....a pretty face....my spouse remarked one day to my surprise...........you know it is a shame that a man cannot see beyond the outside of a person because she would make a wonderful wife and mother.......yes, she would have.....

i saw that newscast... did you see the lady that injected oil into her skin. she was completely distorted and disfigured. yikes.

That is just insane. What the was she thinking??? OMG, I just can't believe this.

By the way Nancy, you are an extremely beautiful person inside and out. Don't ever think that you are not.

It's very sad that so many people feel that what they look like on the outside is all that matters. It's who you are on the inside that makes you beautiful on the outside.

I agree with Jennifer M. in that it's very sad that she felt such a strong urgency to do this. I'm pretty satisfied, in general, about my physical body, wrinkles, flab and all. I probably wouldn't even pay to do this.

What a horrible addiction. I guess I feel sorry for her, but anyone with common sense should have known better. So many people get scarred for things that are not their fault.

I saw that segment too and I reacted the same way. What an idiot! Who would do this to themselves?? Geez. Could that scar be that bad that she had to buy her own silicone and inject it herself??? It couldn've have been that bad. I have a tiny scar by my eye that I've had since I am 14. I stayed home, played hookey from Junior H.S. so I could play with our puppy. He was trying to sleep and I bothered him and he bit me. I never had the scar sewed up so it was my own fault. I have been covering it with cover-up since then. I would never try and have it filled in by myself. She couldn't be that bright to do this herself! Shees!

Amen Nancy! Why would anyone think they were capable of doing it their self? I mean seriously, did the thought "what if something goes wrong?" not run through her head at least once or twice?
