Walter Cronkite Died

Walter Cronkite died tonight at 7:42 p.m., at the age of 92, from cerebral vascular disease.

 

Cronkite was the anchor of CBS Evening News from 1962 to 1981, when Dan Rather took over. At the end of the news each night, Cronkite said, "And that's the way it is..."

 

I was only 10 years old in 1962, and I avoided watching the news unless it was a school assignment for current events.  Or if there was a major news announcement.

 

Perhaps, to me, one of Cronkite's biggest announcements was when President Kennedy died on November 22, 1963.





Or the moon landing on July 20, 1969.  Here he is talking about that in 2007.

 





 

 

He continued reporting for CBS and other networks until 2008.



He was a true professional.  It's too bad that our news anchors today have not learned to be more like him.

You know I read the news earlier and didn't even know he was still alive. I sure did like him MUCH MORE than Dan Rather.

Not sure how it is sad that a 90+ man dies. He lived a very full life.

We always were more of a Peter Jennings household, but I have seen some of Cronkite's special reports. I'm saddened that he has passed.

I agree. If news anchors would step up and concentrate on being good people first maybe their professional lives could live up to the greats that we have lost in the past few years.

I remember this announcement and how he reacted to President Kennedy's death! He took it very hard!

Karen, I'm sure Walter would appreciate your simple but honest compliment. He always felt that he was simply "a reporter". His modesty was another of his great traits. You said it best, and he'd be the first to agree. I grew up watching his CBS News every evening. The 1-hour news block was a nightly ritual in our house. Al Shottelkotte local news followed by Walter Cronkite. Yes, at that time, Ch. 9 was a CBS affiliate; ch. 12 was ABC. :-)
