What comes to mind when you hear the words "humane society"? Likely your local animal shelter that takes in stray, neglected, and abused cats and dogs, promotes their adoption to new homes, and runs spay/neuter programs so that fewer unwanted animals will end up mistreated or euthanized. That's exactly what the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is banking on. This intentional misdirection has made HSUS, according to the Center for Consumer Freedom, the richest animal-rights organization on earth. HSUS has over $85 million in assets. It raises enough money to finance animal shelters in every single state, with money to spare. But it is not affiliated with any local "humane societies," nor does it operate a single animal shelter. http://www.supportiowasfarmers.org/activistnews/humane.aspx
Don't be deceived. HSUS does not need your money. It has an annual budget exeeding the resources of all agriculture crop and livestock associations combined. HSUS cares little about animal welfare. They are a militant animal rights organization that wants to eliminate all animal husbandry.
Here are a few quotes from HSUS:
"We have found that civil disobedience and direct action has been powerful in generating massive attention in our communities ... and has been very effective in traumatizing our targets."JP Goodwin, Committee to Abolish the Fur Trade, National Animal Rights Convention '97, June 27, 1997, now employed by the Humane Society of the United States
"It's really about human behavior and less about the animals. Animals for the most part just need to be left alone." Wayne Pacelle speaking on animal rights, LA Times interview July 2008.
"Stop eating animals, it's the number one thing. If that sounds too enormous, use basic common sense, remove one animal from your diet for a month. If you're feeling good and positive, remove another animal next month." Mary Max, Humane USA Board of Directors, member Advisory Board of New York League of Humane Voters, founder of Kind Green Planet, quoted in Greenpoint Gazette interview, October 2008

"I don't have a hands-on fondness for animals...To this day I don't feel bonded to any nonhuman animal. I like them and I pet them and I'm kind to them, but there's no special bond between me and other animals." Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 251.
"Don't breed dogs, don't buy, don't even accept giveaways" HSUS CEO John Hoyt in a 1991speech.
When asked if he envisioned a future without pets, "If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don't want to see another dog or cat born." Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote, 1993, p. 266.
"My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture."
John "J.P." Goodwin Grassroots Coordinator Humane Society of the United States
Want to help animals?
Support your local Animal Shelter. Shelters supported by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International (SPCA) in all likelyhood will be promoting animal husbandry and welfare.
Donate money to the Humane Society of the United States and you will be giving your hard earned money to radical animal rights activists who don't actually help protect animals from cruelty. They want to eliminate all human interaction with animals.

A person really has to investigate a place before donating to it. I like to donate locally where I can see where the money goes.
It's definately important to research where your money goes, but make sure you are looking up unbiased sources - the CCF started with a 600,000 grant from Phillip Morris, and has attacked groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving for their anti-drunk driving campaigns, and the Center for Disease Control for their public health campaigns. They are an industry front for tobacco, alcohol and agribusiness interests and support those that profit from animal cruelty. They've been condemned by the editorial boards of USA Today, Washington Post and ABC News for misleading the public.
The Humane Society of the United States has never claimed affiliation with local shelters - a fact that is readily available on their site. The HSUS was formed to confront large-scale national forms of animal cruelty - issues that our local animal welfare organizations simply do not have the capacity to handle. The HSUS also provided direct care to more than 70,000 animal in 2008, through their direct care centers, rural veterinary services and emergency services departments.
The Humane Society of the United States was founded to promote animal protection on a national level, so the accusation that we should be financially supporting every animal shelter throughout the country represents a fundamental misunderstanding of our mission.
Local animal shelters and humane societies provide a critical social service, make no mistake about it, and to support their important work, the HSUS hosts an annual training conference, publishes an award-winning trade publication for the animal care and control community, and provides targeted grants such a $250,000 grant that was recently awarded to a Gulf Coast shelter rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina.
But our work, which focuses on celebrating animals and confronting cruelty, also encompasses farm animals, wildlife, animals used in research, and so much more. Check us out at www.humanesociety.org and draw your own conclusions.
Regarding the quotes taken out of context, please read our CEO's blog post on this issue:

And finally, the HSUS has consistently received a 4-star rating (the highest) from Charity Navigator.
Unfortunately, what this article fails to mention is the JP Godwin, quoted above, is a former (still current?) member of the Animal Liberation Front. He was convicted of arson in a CA firebombing. PETA and HSUS contributed to his legal defense fund.
Baloney Hillary!
The HSUS is no longer what they were founded to be. They are purely a legislative group whos long term goal is to abolish all domestic animals and livestock and that we all be vegans. They have and continue to fund groups like ALF ( which are on the US Domestic Terroist list). They are behind every S/N, limit, BSl , anti research legislation etc. legislation in the US! Too many people have been duped by HSUS and their sister loonies Peta.
Animal Welfare yes - animal rights no! When my dogs can bote, drive cares, work and go to scholl then they can have equal rights as hums!
Hilary is right about one thing they did "reward" a area shelter that was directly impacted by hurrican katrina. I do wonder why only $250,000 was "rewarded" when by most estimates they collected 19-34 MILLION dollars in their "help katrina shelters/animals fundraising drive" that they actively soliciited. Also why was this money only given out after the lousiana attorney general wanted hsus investigated for fraudulent use by soliciting by invoking that all the money would go to katrina victims? Pretty good timing for them that after they agreed to hand over the money the attorney general agreed to dismiss it for now. Intersting isnt it?
All you sock puppets are being reported.

It is in fact a common tactic of scam organizations to create sock puppets to troll around public forums to "defend" the organization from truth. Often, these fake accounts are all the same person, creating multiple personas with the intent of creating a fake idea of support. Normally, one or two sock puppets serve as "aggitators"that take the role of antagonist in order to keep the conversation going.

Consider all your butts flagged a frauds.
Wow, you are one paranoid dipshit! Did you even read the comments, some are for the hsus, some (like me) are against, this is a heated issue and many people like myself want light shed on it so this will be a hot topic, anytime anything anti hsus/peta shows up there will be a huge amount of debate, people like you are the reason alot of people dont get involved!
lol
I use to be a fourm administrator. I have had more than enough dealings with sock puppets to know them when I see them.
Did you not have enough of your daily H$U$ brainwashing today?
I apologize for joining gather, I thought I was a individual pointing out something on this article, I guess I am just a sock puppet and julie ann says i and others cannot join, since my comment was anti hsus is julie pro hsus and just not wanting others opinions heard?
Do not apologize to any AR puppet!
Not a sock puppet. A dedicated Australian Shepherd Hooby/show breeder trying to keep my rights to own, show, trial and of coourse love my dogs! I just joined today as i saw this on one of our dog lists.
Julie you sound like a paranoid AR lunatic! You are full of horse manure! You must be drinking the Kool Aid H$U$ and Peta are passing out!
Hey jarilyn,
notice that julie "used" to be admin? also the pic of her with the mixed breed dog? I wonder who's side she is on? I bet she is busy texting Humane Wayne and Ingrid Newirk right now for support.
Make that Hobby/Show breeder
lol,
Um, if you guys we "real" anti-Humane Society peeps, you would have noted that in my first post I in fact referred to sock puppetry as a common tactic of scam organizations. I.E. The Humane Society of the U.S. is a scam agency.
Instead, you try to hide the fact of what you are by claiming I'm the AR nut.
Well now you are trying to cover up the fact that you are or have AR leanings?
I know what I am and that is Anti H$u$, Peta, ALF, Vegan et all!
You are now the one trying to doge what you truly are.
I have a profile.
You do not.
Do the math.
Because I do not care to so the AR fanatics do not get my personal info!
But if you simply joined Gather for conversations, not to specifically engage in sock puppetry, why would the first concern be "AR fantatics" getting your personal info?
Most folks set up their profiles and explore the site a little before jumping head first into controversial topics. You seem to have come here SPECIFICALLY to incite controversy. hmmmm
A agree
In you go to the link below, you will see that the HSUS repudiates violence in the strongest terms. Our employees are law abiding citizens who are achieving remarkable advances for animals. Please go to http://www.hsus.org/about_us/statements/statement_against_violence.html to read our views.
To address the Katrina question, HSUS was recognized nationwide for its enormous deployment in response to the crisis created by Katrina. Since September 1st 2005, the HSUS has committed or spent more than 34 million on general disaster relief and recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast states, the enhancement of its disaster response capacities, and the transformation of public policy concerning animals in disaster. The most recent accounting is available to the public on our website at http://www.hsus.org/hsus_field/hsus_disaster_center/disasters_press_room/
Do note that I didn't include you in my report.
I have no issue with employees defending their companies.
I have no issue with heated discussions or people disagreeing with me.
In fact, I didn't even address the issue of the article. I wasn't "agreeing" or "disagreeing" with the article.
What I have a problem with is obvious sock puppetry. Its so obvious as to be funny. The first few "personalities" come in and intelligently "defend" the organization. Then the "strawman" puppets come in to "attack" the organization, but in an obviously unintelligent manner. I mean, look at Jarilyn's first comment. "Animal Welfare yes - animal rights no! When my dogs can bote, drive cares, work and go to scholl then they can have equal rights as hums!"
You have to TRY to write that bad. No literate person does that accidentally!
And when called on it, they attack me as if I was in fact the HSUS defender or "AR nut." Which in and of itself is a clue, as the only people I have ever known that abbreviate "Animal Rights" are themselves the Animal rights activists.
Thanks for your comment, and I must say it's a very cute puppy in the picture! (obviously I'm a bit partial to the black and tans :) )
On the other hand, I believe that the animal-rights groups (such as PETA) go way too far in their efforts to further their agenda. While the welfare of animals should be promoted, strongarm tactics will never do so. All they do with such activities is to convince their opposition that the organization is comprised of anti-human lunatics.
When Cleveland Amory died, the assets of his group, Fund for Animals, was purchased by HSUS. This included the first animal sanctuary in the US.
HSUS has been operating BlackBeautyRanch east of Dallas for approx 10yrs now. It's better than a shelter, it's a Sanctuary. Before u spread rumours, get your facts right.
I stand corrected. There is a connection between Black Beauty Ranch and HSUS. It appears from the surface that this sanctuary does help animals.
That being said HSUS does not operate the ranch. Aparently they support it. How much of HSUS's budget goes to this Ranch?
"It takes tens of millions of dollars to run campaigns against so many domestic targets, and HSUS consistently misleads Americans with its fundraising efforts by hinting that it’s a “humane society” in the more conventional sense of the term. Buried deep within HSUS’s website is a disclaimer noting that the group “is not affiliated with, nor is it a parent organization for, local humane societies, animal shelters, or animal care and control agencies. These are independent organizations … HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter.”
"So what does HSUS do with the millions it raises using the furry faces of Fido and Fluffy? In 2002, the multi-million-dollar conglomerate gave less than $150,000 to hands-on humane societies and animal shelters."
http://www.activistcash.com/organization_overview.cfm/oid/136
The truth is HSUS portrays itself as an animal welfare organization when in fact it is the richest, most powerful animal rights organization that far exeeds the influence of PETA. The HSUS purposely uses this mis-identification to raise money for animal rights activism.
