Barack Obama ran for president on a campaign platform which advocated greater government transparency, energy independence, and the strengthening of social institutions such as public schools. Obama, however, never asserted that his presidential administration would be in the business of directing private enterprise such as automotive manufacturers or would attempt to construct massive centralized government bureaucracies of unelected officials that have no democratic accountability to the American people. These unelected bureaucrats, commonly called "Czars" are appointed by the president and are accountable only to the president. The fact that Obama has appointed twenty such individuals to administer the will of the executive branch not only provides creditable evidence that the administration is attempting an expansive power grab, but has left many wondering how serious the president actually was about honoring the campaign promise he made about pursuing greater government transparency.

There are many opponents of the so-called Obama Czars who believe such actions by the president are not only antithetical to the political platform that he ran upon, but also represent fundamentally anti-democratic principles that are unconstitutional. While many supporters of the new administration might believe that such criticism would come from the Republican minority in the House and Senate, the most vocal opposition has actually came from a senior member of the Democratic Party. According the Ken Klukowski, Democratic Senator Robert Byrd, the president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, has called the president's actions unconstitutional and a serious threat to the systems of checks and balances enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
Klukowski states, "Senator Byrd is exactly correct. The Constitution commands that government officers with significant authority (called “principal officers”) are nominated by the president but then are subject to a confirmation vote by the U.S. Senate. And principal officers include not only cabinet-level department heads, but go five levels deep in executive appointments, to include assistant secretaries and deputy undersecretaries.

Inferior officers are appointed either by the president, cabinet-level officers, or the courts. But even then, the Constitution specifies that only Congress can authorize the making of such appointments. For these inferior officers, only Congress can create their offices, and also specify who appoints them. And such officers are still answerable to Congress. They are subject to subpoena to testify before Congress, and Congress holds the power of the purse by making annual appropriations for their division or program."
Many of you may still be wondering, just what exactly a Czar is, and why should I be concerned about why the president has recently appointed an unprecedented amount of them? Originally, the title of "Czar" was derived from "Caesar" which meant Emperor in Latin. The European medieval sense of the term, that is, a ruler who claims the same rank as a Roman emperor, with the approval of another emperor or a supreme ecclesiastical official such as the Pope or an Ecumenical Patriarch. In short a Czar is someone who exerts near autocratic control over the populace he or she governs, since the word Czar is inseparably linked with autocracy it also implies exemption from public accountability.
Creating a massive bureaucracy of unelected officials that are appointed and accountable only to the president is certainly a crafty way to avoid campaign promises of greater government transparency, and it is an equally crafty way of denying a failure in governance if a future catastrophic event were to happen to certain sectors of the economy or another area under the control of a czar. Furthermore, the appointment of Czars in various positions allows for more centralized planning and a greater degree of control of society by the executive branch of government. It constitutes a power grab and an ambitious path toward centralized planning that has so infuriated Senate Democrats such as Senator Byrd who have been prompted to write the president a letter criticizing his policies.

Their is no surprise about Obama's transparency now. Obama and Bush are not much different except Obama can talk but like Bush his words are hollow.
Every issue Obama campaigned on has been a lie starting with his agreement with McCain not to use private donations in their campaign.
This czar thing is very scary and should be looked into but who will investigate? Not the congress they are to busy competing for the most lobby money. Not the justice department.
Obama is accountable for the action of these unelected power houses but does not see to be in charge of anything.
I will not buy any more American brand cars because I do not believe in using my money to build something and then paying again to use it.
The public is so far out of touch they can tell you who sleeps with who in Hollywood but when asked who the president is all you get is "DUH."
Its like the constitution does not exist any more and each successive president grabs more and more power they are not allowed but who is paying attention?
omg i agree with something that jack said...lol
The planets must be in alignment. Jack You make a good point. Progressivism is Bipartisan and extremely dangerous.
Its nothing to do with anything but crooked politics.
That's right, then there has to be no approval and no discussion of policy!
Just think, all those folks who were all fussed out about Bush "collecting too much power in the exectutive branch" are quiet now. Imagine that!
The reason Obama wants to sweep the rule of law under the carpet is so he can act like a wannabe dictator.
Obama does not ask for meaningful legislation he demands what he wants like their is no choice.
Bush is a criminal and Obama is turning into a Bush clone keeping all Bush failed policy in place including the GOP neocons in all major departments.
Winston the only thing to imagine is how the politically correct brain dead followers of both parties are helping to destroy the country.
Stay polarized and stay slaves.
If he gets elected watch for the atempt to repeal 22nd Amendment
He will not get any farther with the 22 amendment than Bush did. In 2010 Obama is going to lose seats in congress and his majority with them.
Its a shame because Obama had everything going for him the public, congress, and a mandate from the public to clean up government and all he did was turn into a Bush clone.
Last I heard there were 33 Czars. Bush assumed unprecidented powers and Obama promised to correct that. He has assumed much more power. Now with his ruling elete he will be able to advance the New World Order much more rapidly. With the Homegrown Terrorist Act from the Bush eara his Terrorism Czar can declare any person opposing Obama and his agenda a Terrorist. Obama has the authority to declare Martial Law for any reason or no reason thanks to Congress during the Bush administration. Does anyone else see the progression of a take-over? Obama has four years to complete the program started, not by Bush W but by Bush HW. We were warned. G H W Bush announced the New World Order in his inagural speach.
Evidently the people we elected to be our watchdogs were not paying attention or else the majority of them are One Worlders.
I can name only three or four people in Congress that have fought this take-over of our government, and our nation.
What about that actor from House that got an appointment based on his help in the campain?
But it's Obama, so it's OK.
Obama has no leadership ability.
Winston didn't you get an appointment for following GOP propaganda so loyally.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, they are not really Czars. They will not live in splendid castles and dress in splendid uniforms and order killings on a whim. I assure you their power is NOT as absolute as your paranoid minds makes them out to be.
I guarantee that the first peasant they kill, they will be incarcerated or at the very least, dethroned.
If your paranoia persists, please see a mental health professional.
You should follow your own advice Rude and seek mental help so they can remove the brainwashing. Maybe they will save enough brain cells so you can function on your own.
Lenin took the czar and his family and shot them and dumped them down a well.
