I love to make my own starter. Making your own starter will save you so much money on grocery shopping. You can make everything from chocolate cake to muffins and bread. I make sourdough starter and friendship starter. I just started a new starter a few days ago and thought I would share it with you.
TIP: NEVER USE METAL SPOONS OR METAL BOWLS.
Amish Friendship Starter Recipe
3 cups sugar
3 cups flour
3 cups milk
On Day 1: In a glass bowl or crock bowl combine the three ingredients. Stir mixture with wooden. Cover bowl loosely with dish cloth or cheese cloth. Keep at room temperature. I keep mine on the kitchen counter.

On Day 2, 3, and 4: using wooden spoon stir mixture once each day.
On Day 5: Add:
1 cups sugar
1 cups flour
1 cups milk

On Day 6,7,8 and 9. Using wooding spoon stir mixture once each day.

On Day 10: Add:
1 cups sugar
1 cups flour
1 cups milk

Remove 3 cups of mixture. You can give it away or use it yourself in recipes. Save remaining starter to keep it going.

In a couple days I will post some recipes to use with your starter.

I've seen this, but it was a long time ago and never did get the recipe and I know all kinds of good things can be made with it! Thanks, Connie, I'm looking forward to the recipes :)
My mother made something similar to this, she called it Herman. It had nuts, raisins, dates and different things.
I'm never tasted this myself~
I haven't either Priscilla....I don't know if I could use it...I keep thinking of all the mold and stuff that would grow with the milk and sugar...
That is interesting. I've heard of something like this for baking bread. I'll be back to look at the recipes as you post them.
My dad made the starter to give to a few friends as well as making a few for us. I'm not really a big bread person, but this bread is awesome. Thanks for the recipe.
This is different than the one I have on here. I might have to try yours
mine is just a friendship cake starter
I am glad I saw your last sentence. I was going to ask for recipes :)
So... every 5th day you add more?
I've never made anything like that before... interesting!
My son was making sourdough starter this week at his apartment.
Connie,
I shared this post with my wife who just started a sour dough and she is interested in your recipe for that if you have time to share it.
I have to do up the Today post now but I will post it tonight. :)
I haven't done this for so long in fact it was back when I was married to my first husband. Maybe 1988 - 1989? May have to start one again.
I got some of this once and then let it slip away because I didn't keep adding to it.
We had talked about doing one of these one time, but just never did. I may have to look into it again.
I make this all the time and just love it! I am looking forward to seeing your recipes for using it!
Thanks for sharing this. I had someone give a piece of cake she made and some of the starter but it went bad--it was years ago I can't remember what I did wrong.
I got one of these once - it was called St something bread. I totally ruined it lol.
Can't you keep it in a plastic bag too?
Yes you can but it has a better flavor when it is in a bowl with a towel over it. It can breath and pull in the natural yeast from the air.
A coworker made this for us and gave us all starter kits. She used ziplock baggies. This bread is so yummy!!! I wasn't able to make it though because I don't own a wooden spoon and we have lactose free milk in our home. I didn't want to have to buy those items just to make the bread. But it is really good. I wish I had some now! :)
My mom makes friendship bread with maraschino cherries and walnuts--does one of your recipes call for those things?
Post that recipe for the chocolate cake you make with it!!! That stuff rocked!!! It was the best chocolate cake EVER! So very moist and yummy!
does it ferment?
I have an amazing recipe for Chocolate Cake made with this starter. I had to go find it but here is the Link.
I posted it several years ago before I had a camera so there are not photos included.
I might start reading Amish romances.
Stopping by to say hello and pay back some points-Happy Holidays!
Have a great Sunday!
Chocolate Cake
Victoria has already requested it for Easter Dinner.
