I heard about a poll earlier, in which 75% of republicans; said they would vote for Sarah Palin if she ran for president. I'm sure people are sick of this , but couldn't resist posting my thoughts on the subject. What makes people so sure that Sarah Palin is ready to be president? Maybe she is actually a bright person, who just needs to study up more; I can give her the benefit of the doubt. There were people who were fine with her being vice president or president last election though, didn't watching/listening to her in some of her TV interviews; make some of the people who would consider voting for her- stop and think twice? I'm not being sarcastic, seriously. I really would like to know, how people can just overlook some of these things.
I can understand there being some appeal there, if you feel you relate to someone. But, is relating to someone; the end all and be all of choosing who you vote for? Maybe some people on gather relate to me, does that mean I should run for president in 2016? I won't quite make it for 2012. I also don't understand something else.... Another thing people have expressed that they like about Palin, is the fact that she's a " Washington outsider". First, would a true " Washington outsider" even want to become president? Seems like they wouldn't even fit into that environment, and end up not being able to stand it. I also noticed that some of the same people, who say they liked Palin for being an outsider; also critisize Obama for not having enough experience. Wouldn't an outsider, whoever it is; naturally not have as much experience- as someone who was an insider?
I am asking seriously.... besides feeling you relate to her, what is the appeal in the idea of Sarah Palin as president? What policies do you think she would implement, that you feel would benefit the country? I can't just overlook how she has come off in interviews at times, so I am wondering how someone can look past all that? I know that all/most people who have ever run for public office, have said things that didn't paint them in the best light; but isn't how someone speaks important at all anymore?

regardless of whether I liked her or not, I couldnt vote for someone that doesnt complete their term as Govenor (or what ever office) regardless of the reason ouside of elected to higher office such as Obama was. If by chance she won, would she resign office halfway through? For the most part I am a liberal, but I dont vote for party. Im not a dem or rep. I vote for who I feel I can trust and who i can believe in. If i dont believe or trust in either candidate I pass on voting for either party. I could neither trust nor believe in Palin, so I would have to look at the person running against her and see how I feel about them. I may like Obama for now but that doesnt mean that I will feel the same in 2012. Hopefully I do still believe in Obama.
I am in the exact same category as you are, Bryan, for the same reasons.
Ditto for me. However, I am somewhat more fiscally conservative.
Gasp!! You committed THE cardinal sin, Ellen, you used the brain God gave you and questioned the Palen supporters. I'm betting that you will not get any real concrete honest answers; only party line spew or illogical 'like me' thoughtless stuff if you get any answer at all.
Well, I'd like to try anyway; cause I really would like to know. Besides relating to her, I just don't get what people see in the woman; at least as far as holding the office of the presidency.
And Bryan, I also don't consider myself as a member of any certain party; and there's probably not one that would match the views I have- since I can look at ideas along a spectrum and think each one (or just about) has valid points.
Have you considered the Green Party, Ellen? You could take this survey to see if you might agree with their (our) platform.
Nevermind, that's a pretty lame survey, but on the home page there is a button to see the 10 key values. 8)
I did check out the site a little last night, will have to go back and look more in depth.
She's pretty, (I believe there was some study showing that we vote for the better looking candidate) she's deeply religious, which appeals to her base, and she's charismatic. I think that many often argue that Obama isn't ready to be president. I also think that her media coverage has made people protective of her, thinking that the interviews victimized her, not exposed her. I don't know. Sometimes I think that it doesn't really matter who's in office, the bigger picture doesn't really seem to change.
The bigger picture is the money picture. Those with the most money seem to have control of our government no matter who is in office. Of course that is the nature of our money, isn't it. Has been for all of history. And we aren't even looking for a way to change our money.
And the next democrat will have her concede before the vote.
In her resignation speach, she stated that she "is NOT a quitter."
Can someone explain to her highness that resigning is the same as quiting.
I consider myself to be a "Goldwater Republican;" yet, there is o way in hell that I would vote for any ticket that she is on.
Will Joe Biden quit next year??? I do not think so.
To me, Palin is a quitter, and should not tr for any public office since she could quit that one like she did being governor.
oh no
I asked the question about experience comaparing her to Mr. Obama.... and was told because she ran a whole state that gave her the experience. And it didn't seem to matter that she didn't run it for very long (or poorly for that matter).
If you don't accept her experience as a Governor then how about she ran a town as a mayor? Oh, I know, you'll say she did that badly, too. But from what I hear it's exactly the opposite.
Tell me what had Obama run before he took the job to run this country. What was his executive experience?
Since you insist on convincing me she would make a great President for "all" the experience she has. Please enlighten me to what her views are and how she would be such a great asset to this country. And if being a mayor or governor is so important why hasn't been put into th constitution "Prior experience as an elected official in running a city or state government will be required before one can become president." I dare say not ALL our Presidents held that position before and had little experinence in "leading".... so really tell me ... explaine to me, why it bothers YOU so much.
I don't know how well or poorly Palin served as Mayor, I didn't live in her town.
Lera,
she QUIT Governor and mayor. She left Wasilla in debt they cant pay from perks she wanted. (She wanted a hocky ring built on private land which she attempted to seize. Now it is still in court, Legal costs for the city) She also attempted to have books burned from the local library.
Look, Lera, I live in Alaska. I know more about what's going on than you do. I dont know what you're hearing or from where, but before you profess facts about her, be sure they are correct.
I'm a conservative and I didn't vote in the last election BECAUSE of Palin. I feel she is a narrow minded, unqualified hick. I also felt the only reason she got added to the ticket was because she is a woman. And prefer women to stay out of positions of power.
Why on Earth do you prefer women to stay out of positions of power????
Perhaps it's time for a third party - moderates.
"I also felt the only reason she got added to the ticket was because she is a woman. And prefer women to stay out of positions of power."
Huh? What?
A grand idea, T B! Let's do it!
Did people feel the same way when Dole resigned his seat in the senate in to run for president in 1996?
but isn't how someone speaks important at all anymore?
Are you saying that how you sound when speaking is more important than having substance? So, you'd believe anything someone tells you if he talks pretty?
I found no substance at all in any of her speeches. She did spew a lot of hate, though, even the gop had to tone her down. Some deeply religiouss woman, huh? What religion was that? It sure does not follow Jesus Christ, that's for sure.
Personally, I hope they don't pick her. I want someone who can win and I don't think she's the one.
I do hope they pick her, and for the same reason. I don't want any republican in office. Any trust I once had for any of them is gone completely. I am a former republican and voted for GWB the first time; didnt vote at all the second time. I dont think much of the dems either.
Republicans do not have much to pick from, but surely the best is not Palin.
Just for the entertainment factor I hope to high heavens that Palin runs against Obama. Thus far, she has highly entertained me--the Couric intervew, the turkey slaughter, the talk with the "French president," the moose stew, the $20,000 make up, believing in witchcraft, trying to ban books, her list of things she reads, her cutsey Presidential winks, her self-deception, her hubris, her poor me defense...
Bottom line, we need to keep her on the news. The longer she stays the more popular she becomes with the GOP. AT the end, they will nominate her. Then we can go get Tina Fey and SNL will be a joy to watch.
Gads! For shame Jared!
I think the party may be grooming her to compete with Hillary at some future date.
Thanks for posting to Fugitives from Ignorance, Conformity, and Peer Pressure
Do you think so, Jan? If not for 2012, what then? Hillary will be too old in 2016 to be a serious candidate.
Aw, you're just trying to make me feel better, but thanks, anyway!
Gads! You fifured me out! Heheheheh!
Does anyone want a President that believes the earth is 5,000 years old?
How about a President that believes in the End Times and will be motivated to steer global events towards a Middle Eastern catastrophe?
Maybe a President that believes abstinence is the true answer?
We might as well elect Goofy with Tweety Bird as Vice President and the Seven Dwarfs on the Supreme Court.
Agreed, John.
"I love the people of Alaska, therefore I am quitting to serve them better. "
"It's take courage to quit, a quitter would stay and continue fighting. I am a fighter, therefore I quit."
That's palintology. A bunch of words with no subjet verb object and they eat it all up. Of course they would vote for her. They mantra is anything but the democrat. Does not matter if the republican is a tool.
I agree with you, Jared, mores the pity.

but isn't how someone speaks important at all anymore?
Are you saying that how you sound when speaking is more important than having substance? So, you'd believe anything someone tells you if he talks pretty?
No Lera, talking pretty isn't more important than having substanance; and it doesn't mean that because someone can speak well- everything they say is true either. But we do get at least some indication of someone's thought process by the way they speak, if what someone is saying is incoherent; then how can someone believe that they would be able to critically think about policies that would affect this country? or be able to do the diplomatic things as far as dealing with other countries leaders?
Addressing some of the other comments: I don't believe that previous experience is the end all and be all of everything, but I was asking about the discrepency between critisizing Obama for not having enough experience, while at the same time; expressing a liking for someone else for being a "washington outsider". If I'm not remembering right, someone feel free to correct me; but I thought Obama was major of chicago, before going on to the senate? So does Sarah Palin really have that much more experience than Obama, being major and governor? Wouldn't the senate also be a leadership role?
Also: I think Dole resigning a senate seat to run for president is a bit different, at least people knew why Dole was resigning; I could understand it a lot more if I at least have some indication of why someone is resigning. I was also concerned about the fact that at one time, she was involved with a secessionist group her husband belonged to; she gave one speech that I know of- in support of the group's cause. If I was considering voting for someone,I'd want to know if they still held those views, and if they did; why they'd want to run for president- I'd also want to know at what point they changed those views- if applicable. Listening to her speak, I'd be concerned about some of the policies she would implement, or might try to; because of the fact she is deeply religious. I'm not saying a deeply religious person shouldn't be president, someone's religion makes no difference to me when I vote. I would be concerned about policies that curtail civil liberties, or ones that violate the seperation of church and state. And if it is true, I'd also be concerned about someone being president; who had a history of banning books; I'd want to know more about what went on with that.
I am also still curious as to what policies people think Palin would implement, that would make her a good president
Weren't these polls taken before she showed herself to be a blithering idiot, and an embarrassment to everyone she met?
