This article is definitely not for the squeamish.
Last February I posted an article about expired food dates. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977581780
I received many comments and many different opinions about expired food dates.
This post is to inform everyone that I am still eating these hamburger patties that have an expired date on them, or a "best if used by" date on them. It was a very large box of hamburger patties.
Night before last I decided that I would thaw out a few of these hamburger patties and prepare them for yesterdays lunch. I did not have any marinade to marinate them in but I did have a large bottle of my favorite drink, Dr. Thunder. Dr. Thunder is a Walmart version of Dr. Pepper. It costs 78 cents per bottle and is very good. It's just a little bit sweeter tasting than Dr. Pepper, but is otherwise very close in taste to this nice drink. I put four hamburger patties in a flat storage bowl that has a cover and pored about 2 cups of Dr. Thunder over them, covered them and let them marinate overnight. Yesterday I grilled them on my George Foreman grill (which I hate to clean, yuck) and they were delicious. I didn't die. I'm alive.
I didn't eat all the patties so today I had leftover expired hamburger patty sandwiches for lunch and again they were delicious.
After reading this you can understand why I titled this "Not for the Squeamish". I have a feeling that a lot of you are saying, ewwwwwww!
It's the Fourth of July today, what did you have for lunch? I'll bet it wasn't an expired leftover hamburger marinated in Dr. Thunder sandwich. Mmmmmmmm, good.

I pay pretty close attention to expiration dates and the food itself when I eat it. For meat, when it comes to cattle it's from our own cows, but otherwise we have to watch it.
I was pretty worried with your title for this article, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. This is a lot better than hearing about the worms in some boy's leg (video on Youtube), which was the after dinner conversation last night at a friend's house. LOL!
We are having chicken, but not expired lol
You're having live chickens for dinner?
ewww Chuck lol
I never heard of using soda as a marinade. Does it change the flavor much?
during an ill-advised stint of restaurant ownership, our best-selling dish was slices of rare roast beef cooked in Coca Cola. It was delicious.
It just flavors the meat. I like it. Didn't have any coke, but I did have the Dr. Thunder, LOL
It also helps tenderize it.
we ordered pizza for lunch but otherwise we've been smoking different meats all day and just now fired up the grill for brats, hamburgers and hotdogs
(Steve poured cans of Coke on the smoked pork for his family reunion)
It's not a bad way to flavor meat. I like the taste.
Heck, Lee, my first stop when I shop for meat is the mark down bin. The only thing I won't buy from that area is chicken..gotta be fresh.
As for your burgers..I would have never thought to marinate them in Dr. Pepper...cool idea though. Might give it a try....Do they backen too much becasue of the higher sugar content?
Maybe on an outdoor grill, but my grill is the "George Foreman hard to clean but I still use it anyway one" and I was able to monitor them while cooking and I don't think they are any browner or blacker than usual. The marinate could cause a high flame up on an outdoor grill causing them to burn, don't know just guessing.
Lee ,I've eaten stuff that would make your curl ! Expired beef patties ain't bad ! I'm still eating BBQ ,ribs , sausages , slaw ,potato salad ,cookies and cake.
We had a change for the 4th from our usual barbeque. Everyone pigged out on chicken and dumplins, fresh corn cut off the cob and fried, fresh peas and squash, corn bread, green salad fresh from the farmer's market and a super egg custard pie served up with lots of iced tea. Followed that up later in the afternoon with cold watermelon.
Feasting in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh man, that sounds so good. I did have some watermelon this afternoon. But I had it the way I like it - alone. LOL I'm going to Kentucky (I live in Texas) in about a week. My daughter owns a vineyard and she is also a gourmet cook so I will have the pleasure of eating her good cooking at this time. I rarely cook for myself. I'm not going to stay very long I actually had rather be by myself even when I travel, but I love my children so will stay a few days at my daughters house. My son from Chicago is also driving down for the visit. It's gonna be nice, but being a loner I'm sort of dreading it. I know that's hard to understand for people who are joiners and social types, but I'm not one of these types. I'm also planning a trip to Europe later on and am looking forward to it. I'm so happy that your 4th has turned out to be such a pleasant and enjoyable one. It's wonderful that we can live in a land where we are free to feast. God Bless America.
Lee,
I am a social person but I am very comfortable being alone as well. I love traveling but enjoy it best when by myself. Hope you have a good visit and a great European vacation.
I DON'T LOOK AT THE DATES..
This 4th, I went all out. I was so hungry by 3pm that I had something big. I ordered a chicken cordon blue with cole slaw on the side. I was very full from all that. I waited one hour at the diner, then ordered ice cream. ONe scoop of strawberry and one of cookies and cream. It was so good folks. But as usual, I spent it alone except by 8 pm my neighbor asked me to meet her at Duncan Donut to chat.
My husband and I took the grandsons out to the Olive Garden. Not very American but we did go to see fireworks afterwards.
My husband and I were invited to dinner at a friend's home. We had crab cakes, roasted red potatoes, corn on the cob, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and a delicious artisan bread. For dessert we had key lime pie and it was so yummy. In fact, the entire dinner was yummy. After dark, we went outside (they live on a tributary of the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, VA), walked down to their pier and watched fireworks all around us. There must have been a dozen different private fireworks displays that kept us turning completely around to see them all. They lasted for about an hour. It was a fabulous evening!
As for the expired meat, if you freeze it by the 'best used by' date, I think it's fine. And most expire dates are 'best sold by' dates. And you can keep them in the frig up to two or so days.
The expiration dates are usually "sell by dates" according to a food web site. (can't remember which one) Most foods are good for a while after the date on the box otr label. Use your nose to determine. If they smell bad...throw out!
Lee plays Russian Roulette drinking High Fructose Corn Syrup and eating expired meat while I slink away hoping for the safety and long term health of my friend, who knows I didn't vote and still likes me...
You really are very likeable, you just don't want anyone to know it and you have no patience with ignorance. LOL
By the way, I didn't vote either. I just couldn't decide which one I disliked the least, so I opted for neither one and threw myself on the mercy of whatever powers that be. I think the powers that be are very angry. LOL
Ahhh, no patience with ignorance. Lee, there's answers, and very good ones I might add, to every question in the universe on the internet. Well, almost. While it takes some patience and practice learning to search effectively, learning how to type search terms using -s, 's, commas, and "s it's actually pretty easy after a minute or two. I'm retired and do nothing but sit here and read, all day long, generally for about 10 hours a day. Some people simply can't invest that kind of time in knowledge and it's really a shame and although I do understand, you're absolutely right.
Voting's not all it's cracked up to be in this country. We only get two choices and we invariably elect the evil of two lessers voting for the lesser of two evils.
I had pizza yesterday!
That's definitely an original meal. I'm not so sure I'd ever marinate meat in soda.
"Dr Thunder" LOL, I suppose it would tenderize the meat. I didn't know about that one, I do not indulge in soft drinks. I had turkey meatballs made in the frying pan
Oh my. I have one son who does not drink soft drinks either. He didn't stick to his upbringing. He doesn't even eat at the Dairy Queen any more. LOL
