Fireworks
A rocket splits the air;
it glares
against an ink black sky.
A choral crowd ooohs and aaahs,
the rocket bursts-
a baby cries.
A rocket races skyward,
another’s fired.
Both dance across heaven’s stage.
Tilted heads trace their paths;
the rockets burst-
a fiery rage.
A rocket stabs the night.
Its flight
ordained by a soldier’s eye.
A warrior crowd roars triumphant;
the rocket bursts-
an enemy dies.
A rocket pierces steel;
it kills
a soldier, another loses an eye.
A solemn funeral crowd gathers-
the coffin lowers-
a mother cries.
A repost of a poem I wrote in 2007 in honor of the 4th of July and to remember those who have been injured or lost their lives in this senseless war. Lest we forget why we celebrate the 4th of July...

Hi Phil---and thank you for reading and being so kind with your comments on my work ;-)
Brilliant. Your phrases are well crafted and put together the scene beautifully.

Thank you Rose for reminding us!
Lest, we forget:)
so senseless," the bombs bursting in air"! America is the only country in the world with "war" in its National Anthem!
Wow, this knocked my socks off.
Thank Vicky, that meant a lot to me ;-)
Powerful, Rose.
Nicely written
This is a wonderful, powerful tribute. It just caught my breath.
Wow, this is so powerful!
Something special about the 4th, isn't it? Maybe because it's day of family celebration outside for the most part.
The fireworks, the second stage of the day always make a splendid finality.
So well written !
Thank you Rose !!!
This really strikes a chord. Well written, Rose.
Such an excellent poem must be featured on Poet's Weekly Muse.
You take the theme and expose it from every angle. Brava!
You have just made my day Jan ( you know how hard Mondays can be, espcially after a long weekend ;-)
Thank you so much for the feature!
Thanks so much to everyone who read this and commented, I appreciate you all remember why we celebrate the 4th.
I don't have words to praise you,Rose.How beautiful..sad that there is no real Home -page of Gather for others to read this.

Lovely poem. Reminded me of when I had to write a fireworks poem for homework in school and my family all stood around throwing out phrases for me to use while the fireworks went off. But your poem is better.
