She explained that Alaska has clean air as well as alot of oil. Actually that makes sense, Sarah, because you guys do not burn it, you sell it. Then she proceeded to explain that she is resigning because in the later stages of any service as an elected administrator, you become a lame duck, uselessly traveling around on the public dime. She wanted to spare the citizens of Alaska that horrible fate.
Speculation abounds as to the actual reason why Palin is quitting her job as Alaska Governor. Is it too stressful while taking care of a young child? Is it not fun anymore? Does she want the time to run for higher office? Problem with that last one is that you do not make yourself look good for higher office by quitting your job for no apparent reason only a few months into the first term of the president that you want to run against in 3.5 years.
At this point I think I no longer care what Sarah Palin does or why she does it. I just do not want to hear any more of her odd, rambling, pseudo-folksy speeches. 'Bye.

If she is unable or unwilling to finish out first term as Governor because she faces opposition, what makes anyone think she would do any better in any other elected position?
Calling the running of a population smaller than the city of Detroit a "superficial, wasteful bloodsport" doesn't lend credence to her determination and fortitude.
Or is she stepping down in an effort to forestall being drummed out of office due to a brewing scandal ?
Even Fox News is after Sarah Palin:
Fox News: Sarah Palin is inarticulate, undereducated
I was shocked at her resignation, but I don't think we've heard the last of her...
Oh, how I hope this ridiculous parody of a politician runs for President. And I hope she's the Republican Candidate. She'll be their George McGovern.
Summpin, Summpin going on. Has Travis been hunting with Dick?

thanks for your replies guys. if it is preparation to run for president, it's an illustration of the "Peter principle"- that many of us get promoted beyond our ability to function usefully.
If as she says it is inevitable for a Governor to become a useless lame duck after the first couple of years, well then there is obviously actually no such thing as public service. NO Governor of ANY state should serve a full term, by that logic. huh? She said that she did not just want to "Hold the title" of Governor". Hello, Sarah, it's not just holding the title, it's doing the job. Did you ever? She wants to "pass the ball" to a teammate like any good point guard should- hello it's not a game of basketball, the people of Alaska elected you in the expectation that you would do your job.
here in Virginia, we have faced a controversy of a different sort, as Governor Tim Kaine has also worn the hat of U.S. Democratic Party Chairman. You can't do both jobs, some have argued, he should have resigned as Governor to be DNC. But it could also be argued that would have betrayed the trust of those who elected him in the expectation that he would serve his 4 years. What other job does Palin have, besides Mom? It's just really odd. it's just so obvious that the stated reason for resigning is NOT the actual reason.
To continue with Sarah's basketball analogy, she just committed the turnover that's going to result in her opponent's game-winning layup.
How can even die-hard conservatives ever take someone like this seriously again?
But at least the right wing of the Republican Party still has Joe the Plumber.
No, I thought I'd heard Joe jumped aboard the Libertarian ship.
Betcha there's an up-coming scandal. Like Trig is actually her daughter's baby--widely thought. wouldn't an affair be fun? Perhaps she caught caught on tape saying, "Damn."
No this whole thing centers around her stance on Abortion.
There has been rumors within her Health Department about firing people for 'not being on the right side of social issues'.
I believe she will become the poster mom for abortion advocates around the country.
Well, that would be too, too thoroughly appropriate. She is one of the main reasons I am pro-choice.

Will she replace Bill O'reily on FOXNEWS?
from CNN:
A Republican source close to her political team told CNN that it was a “calculation” she made that “it was time to move on.” The governor’s “book deal and other issues” was “causing a lot of friction up” in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes that she is “mapping out a path to 2012.”
huh. so the Gov office of Alaska is no longer a solid platform for her political ambitions. But how is it better to have no platform at all to stand on?
I seriously hope she throws her hat in the ring right away. I'd love to see her campaigning for three and a half years, spend all her money, make all her idiotic mistakes, get all her crappy folksy down-home humor out in public where we can all tire of it and then LOSE spectacularly.
Then we will be rid of her for good. She is the proverbial bad penny - simply wont go away.
We used to put bad pennies on the railroad tracks and wait for the train to come by.
hm... good idea.
I think she's going to be involved in the cessation of Alaska from the Union. I smell big trouble.
Given the recent spate of GOP 2012 Presidential hopefuls getting into trouble, maybe she was recently caught "hiking the Appalachian Trail".
The governor of Alaska is a four-year gig and the next one begins in December of 2010. The election is next November, I believe. So that's one of the shortest lame duck periods for any politician. And she's jumping ship more than a year before that lame duckness begins? That makes very little sense.
She is more than likely trying to get out in front of a scandal or some expose' about her personal life. Like most right wingers she has a closet full of skeletons, just waiting to fall out into day light. Maybe a lesbian lover? Or someone found her KKK card? Or maybe its just that the truth about that retarded baby belonging to someone else?
I don't know about the ones you suggest, but it will be interesting to watch the investigations going forward to see what they turn up. This is such a strange withdrawel (half-way into the first term as governor), I have to wonder at her plan.
It might be that she's being Pi$$y because she wasn't asked to join the Bohemian Club Festival this year? Especially, since she has all these neat new outfits to wear (I'm sorry, Ensembles!) to political events.
I think she's going to start her own "Republican Rapture Party. The RRP. She'll be the magnet for all the non-thinkers in America. It will be great. If she actually wins, we can give everyone a polygraph test, and if they actually voted for her--we can ship them all to Alaska, Sell Alaska to Putin's group, and Ms. Palin-tology can communicate from her back porch steps.

Dexter- I had no problem with your post except for the word "retarded". I thought that was unnecesary, but I will leave it to you if you want to rephrase.
All my life "retarded" was not a rude or bad comment, it was just a word describing a person who's normal growth and development was retarded from its natural course. I am old enough not to have to change my language in order for younger people to keep from reading other things into it. I just dont understand why cant they just leave perfectly good words alone? They ruined "mother" and "gay" "queer" even "bitch" (was just a word to describe a certain type of dog). and "Jackass" (which just meant a male mule)...
I intended no harm, I just dont udnerstand. To my generation that isnt meant as derogatory term. There are normal people and people who are retarded, they had some kind of problem at birth that retarded their development. How does that get to be a bad word? At my age do I have to conform to you kids that came after me?
You tell 'em Dexter. Us old farts need to have our say too. You youngsters just roll your eyes and bear with us.
She has good political instincts and may have felt getting out of the limelight and sensational media for awhile was a wise move. She has always been successful working as an outsider and challenging the system against the odds. The Republican party regulars have been petty and jealous. She may be able to build her own following nationally to counter their power and hostility. But her talk at the press conference was a muddle.
"...and may have felt getting out of the limelight and sensational media for awhile was a wise move."
Whatever trick she has up her sleeve does not include staying out of the limelight.
Dexter- it's okay, just a culture change. Like the change from "negro" to "black" to "african american". Many people are sensitive, as you see.
"She's nuts."
You betcha.....
Or maybe it's the "change" coming on.
Ding dong the bitch is gone! We may not have heard the absolute last from her, but even if it's only for now, nothing is better than something! But the good news is, she has more free time to do nice things, like look at Russia from Alaska!
There is another shoe left to drop. Stay tuned.
Bottom line, she is a quitter. When the going gets tough she quits. She did this with four colleges already.
I am revisiting this now after more time to think. I am guessing that she plans to take some trips to the lower 48 to speak to crowds this fall and winter, to sort of try to become the Republican standard bearer and take it away from Rush Limbaugh? She has a group of passionate fans who will be eager to see her.
the thing of it is, if she hopes that this will grow into a majority of americans, I think that is mistaken. She has a group who love her no matter what, and a group who think she is crazed and unsuitable for public office. Then you have the people in the middle, the moderates, who don't quite know what to think of her. Quitting as Alaska's Governor before the end of the term does not seem like the way to convince the moderates of this nation that she is the One. So I do not see how this builds her political future. Palin seems to have a fast motion political instinct of Do or Die. She does not seem to be very patient.
"Quitting as Alaska's Governor before the end of the term does not seem like the way to convince the moderates of this nation that she is the One. "
I am not convinced she can convince conservatives that she is the one. Freed from the need to stay in or near Alaska, she will continue to command media attention whereever she goes and she will be going. Regardless of what her future political fortunes may be, she is in position now to make a lot of money and she would be a fool not to make some of that hay while the sun is still shining on her.
BUT media attention alone does not translate into campaign contributions or primary victories.
Estimated number of primary victories........0.
I missed the breaking news by many hours due to the fact that I overseas and july 3rd was no holiday here.
Do they play hockey in Argentina. Make it Argentinian soccer player. Find out which soccer play flew to Alaska lately.
Jokes aside, this woman is nuts. Good riddance.
It is hard to make sense of someone who babbles like a hyper 13 year old.
